PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Air Force took five of the six points in the final regular season series, winning a shootout over Robert Morris, Saturday, Feb. 22, at Clearview Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa. The game officially ends in a 3-3 overtime tie.
Robert Morris (10-19-5, 7-15-4 AHA) scored 65 seconds into the game on the rush as Walter Zacher scored his team-leading 15th of the season. Air Force (14-19-3, 11-13-2 AHA) tied the game after Mason McCormick drew a penalty and the Falcons went on the power play. On the ensuing faceoff, Clayton Cosentino won the draw and Chris Hedden slid the puck to the left circle. Nolan Cunningham tied the game with a one-time at 11:49 for his fifth goal of the season. Cosentino collected his 99th career point on the play. Late in the period, the Colonials went on the power play and regained the lead as Micheal Felsing scored with 15 seconds left.
After a scoreless second period, the Falcons tied the game early in the third period with the second power-play goal of the game. Cunningham found Hedden at the point. Hedden's shot was redirected by Sam Stitz at 4:15 for the freshman's seventh goal of the season. Robert Morris regained the lead again as McKay Hayes tipped in a shot by Michael Craig at 8:04 for a 3-2 RMU lead. Air Force tied the score when Hedden intercepted a pass and went short-side to tie the game at 3-3 with 4:58 left.
Air Force outshot RMU, 6-1, in overtime, but neither team scored and the game went to a shootout.
Neither team scored in the first two rounds, but Falcon freshman Nick Sajevic scored to a 1-0 lead in the third round. Goalie Guy Blessing made a save on Trent Wilson and the Falcons earned the extra point in the standings.
RMU outshot Air Force, 46-39. The Falcons were 2-for-4 on the power play while the Colonials were 1-for-4. Blessing made a career high 43 saves. Croix Kochendorfer made 36 for RMU.
"Robert Morris played so much better tonight than last night," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We chased the scoreboard the entire game and dodged a bullet. We never led until that final save in the shootout. We took their best punches tonight and found a way to get two points. Our power play contributed tonight which is a good thing. Blessing was our player of the game. We will need to be better next week, especially early in the game. We have home ice in the playoffs and we need to play our best hockey next Saturday."
Air Force is the seventh seed in the Atlantic Hockey playoffs and will host 10th-seeded Robert Morris, in a single playoff game on Saturday, March 1, at 5:05 pm MT at the Cadet Ice Arena.
