ARLINGTON, Tx., - Air Force men's swimmer Tanner Wilson earned a significant honor, as he was named the Western Athletic Conference Men's Freshman of the Year, released by conference officials on Tuesday afternoon.
"Tanner has had a tremendous season," commented head coach Rob Clayton. "He stepped right into the strength of our team, the breaststroke group, and competed at a high level right away. Wilson made huge progress demonstrated by tremendous time drops at the WAC Championships."
While competing at the WAC Championships, Wilson etched his name into the Falcon top ten times list for the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:56.11 for an NCAA B cut and third best at the Academy. Additionally, Wilson placed fifth overall in the event finals. For the fifth all-time in the Academy 100 breaststroke and another NCAA B cut, he touched the wall at 53.12 to take fifth place overall. In addition, Wilson swam nine personal best times at the Championships.
Wilson notched a dominant freshman campaign, recording 27 top ten individual finishes, with 20 being top five placements during the regular season. On the relay side, the Sumner, Wash., native, was a member of nine top five relays, helping his team to finish first in two.
Clayton expressed, "He definitely earned this award, as he was the only freshman to achieve NCAA B cuts and swim in two A finals. I am very excited to see how Tanner continues to grow and develop as a young man, future Air Force officer, and as a Falcon Swimmer."
