Air Force Drops Series Finale to Army

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo., - The Falcons (4-7) drop the series finale to Army (2-7) in seven innings, 16-5, on Sunday afternoon at Erdle Field. Air Force still claimed the series win at 2-1. Across the game, AF hitters marked eight hits, five RBIs, a double, and a homer, while the pitching staff accumulated 10 strikeouts.

At the plate, Christian Taylor tied his career high with three RBIs off a home run and a sacrifice fly. Walker Zapp and Cam Anstey accounted for one RBI each.

John Mitchell (1-2) took the start on the mound, throwing three strikeouts and allowing six runs off five hits over one full inning. For 2.1 innings, Ethan Dillinger allowed just one run, two hits, and notched three strikeouts. Charlie Russell, Cranz Smelcer, Joey Collier, and Gunner Gilmore all made an appearance before Davis Rhyne threw the final two innings, with a pair of strikeouts and one run allowed.

Army hopped on the board in the top of the first, scoring six for a 6-0 lead.

The Falcons responded in the bottom of the same inning to trim the deficit to 6-2. In his first plate appearance and start of the season, Chase Spencer led off with a single up the middle. Alex Adams followed with a single to left for two base runners. In the third hole, Walker Zapp brought Spencer home with the third consecutive single of the frame. The pair of runners still on base advanced on a ground out by Tripp Garrish. To send Adams across the plate, Christian Taylor knocked a sacrifice fly to left field.

To make it a one-run game, Air Force notched three runs off three hits, but still trailed 6-5 in the bottom of three. Garrish opened the inning with a walk and was sent all the way home when Taylor hit a long shot over the left field fence. The next batter, Zach Peters singled down the left line and claimed second on a wild pitch. Ben Niednagel put Peters on third with a ground out and Cam Anstey plated him with a single up the middle, to score the final run for the Falcons.

In the top of the fourth, the Black Knights homered for a 7-5 advantage.

Army scored eight runs, 15-5, in the top of the fifth frame.

Plating their final run on a long ball, the Black Knights secured the score at 16-5.

Air Force will travel to No. 25 TCU for a pair of midweek games on Tuesday March 4^th and Wednesday March 5^th. Both games are slated for 4 p.m. CT/3 p.m. MT starts.
