CAIRO, Egypt -- One week after defending his NCAA title on the pommel horse, Air Force senior Patrick Hoopes captured his second international medal of the year with a third-place performance on his signature event at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics Apparatus World Cup in Cairo, Egypt, on Sunday, April 27.
Hoopes recorded the highest score of his three World Cup events during today's finals, as he tallied a 14.700 (5.9 difficulty, 8.800 execution) to place third and join Armenia's Hamlet Manukyan (14.800) and Italy's Gabriele Targhetta (14.766) on the podium. Hoopes advanced to his third final in as many World Cup competitions after scoring a 14.666 to finish second out of 25 athletes during Friday's qualifier.
In his first season on the international stage, Hoopes medaled in two of his three World Cup events, placing second at Baku and third at Cairo. In fact, he never finished lower than fourth in any round of World Cup competition (qualifications or finals) this spring.
