Ninth-Ranked Air Force Set to Host MPSF Championships

The ninth-ranked Air Force men's gymnastics team returns to the Academy this weekend to host top-ranked Oklahoma, No. 2 Stanford and No. 10 California at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnastics Championship on Saturday, April 5.
MEET INFORMATION
The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men's Gymnastics Championships will take place inside the Academy's Cadet West Gym on Saturday, April 5, at 4:00 p.m. (MT). Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at AFTickets.com (doors will open two hours prior to the start of the meet). Live results will be provided through the virtius scoring system, while the meet will be broadcast live on overnight.com.
BASE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
The U.S. Air Force Academy has adjusted the process to access the installation, which will affect Saturday's meet. While the installation remains open for events, if you do not have a DoD ID card, you will need to obtain a pass to enter the base. Spectators must request a base pass - INFORMATION AND LINKS FOR THIS WEEKEND'S ACCESS ARE POSTED AT GOAIRFORCEFALCONS.COM. Once you register, you will receive a message on your phone about approval. Each adult requesting a base pass must present a valid driver's license to scan at the gate. Spectators under the age of 18 with an approved adult are allowed to access the base for athletic events.
STARTING ROTATION
Air Force, the No. 3 seed in the MPSF Championships, will begin the competition on the high bar and rotate through the floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, and parallel bars. Top-seeded Oklahoma will begin on the vault, while two-seed Stanford and four-seed California will start on the parallel bars and floor exercise, respectively.
SCOUTING THE FIELD
Oklahoma currently leads the NCAA with a four-score average of 327.183, while Stanford – winners of the last five NCAA team titles – is ranked second with a 326.100 average, and California rounds out list of conference opponents with a 311.917 average. Individually, Stanford's Asher Hong and Taylor Burkhart lead the NCAA on the still rings (14.433) and all-around (80.183), respectively.
AIR FORCE IN THE RANKINGS
The Falcons boast three gymnasts listed among the nation's Top 8 in the latest NCAA standings. Patrick Hoopes, who currently leads the nation on the pommel horse with a four-score average of 14.950 , is one of two Air Force gymnasts listed among the Top eight in that event, as Jack Matlock is listed eighth with a 14.017 average. Erich Upton is ranked second in the all-around behind a four-score average of 78.267. As a team, the Falcons are ranked fourth in the pommel horse with a four-score average of 54.292 and ninth overall with an average score of 312.700.
HOOPES NAMED MPSF SPECIALIST OF THE YEAR
In the midst of a stellar senior season, Patrick Hoopes was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Specialist of the Year by the league coaches on April 3, becoming the first Academy gymnast to ever earn a postseason specialty award from the conference.
TRIO NAMED REGULAR-SEASON ALL-AMERICANS
After finishing the regular season ranked among the top-eight of the national standings in their respective events, Patrick Hoopes, Jack Matlock and Erich Upton were named Regular-Season All-Americans by the College Gymnastics Association on April 1. Hoopes and Matlock entered championship season ranked first and eighth, respectively, on the pommel horse, while Upton was ranked No. 2 in the all-around.
WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE FALCONS
The collegiate season comes to a close on April 18-19, when the top teams and gymnasts travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the 2025 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships at Crisler Center. The two-day competition begins with the National Qualifier on Friday, April 18, while the top teams and specialists will compete in the finals on Saturday, April 19.
