USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- The Air Force volleyball team closed out the opening weekend of the 2025 campaign with a dominant 3-0 sweep over Seattle in the final match of the Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic at the Academy on Sunday, Aug. 31. Rolling the previously undefeated Redhawks in straight 25-12, 25-17, 25-11 sets, the Falcons improved to 3-0 on the year and captured their second ASMC team title (2022).
The Falcons were nearly unstoppable on the offensive front, hitting .446, accounting for just six errors during a 43-kill afternoon on 83 swings. Sophomore Grace Fiaseu paced the Falcons with an East Gym Record .833 outing (11-1-12), while classmate Bella Christensen – making her first collegiate start – added 10 kills on .600 hitting (10-1-15). Senior Ashley Bible paced Air Force with 12 kills, as the trio combined for 33 of the team's 43 strikes. Junior Jordan Suan accounted for team highs in digs (18) and aces (three), while sophomore Mia Loyd accounted for 34 assists and tied with Fiaseu and senior Alex Hatchett for the team-lead in blocks (three).
Air Force wasted no time in taking control of the winner-take-all tournament finale against Seattle, flying out to a fast 4-0 lead that sent the Redhawks into an immediate timeout. Christensen and Hatchett teamed up for a match-opening block, while scores from Bible (ace) and sophomore Alysa Walker (kill) contributed to the Falcons' opening onslaught. Air Force pushed their lead to five (6-1), while back-to-back kills from Fiaseu and a solo stop from Hatchett extended the advantage to six (11-5). Air Force continued to pull away from the Redhawks, as kills from Walker (two), Fiaseu (two) and Bible (one) pushed the lead out to 10 at the 19-9 mark. Seattle put together back-to-back scores for the first time at the 19-11 mark, but back-to-back strikes from Fiaseu, a kill from Christensen and an ace from Loyd headlined a 6-1 run that closed out the match and gave Air Force the easy 25-12 victory.
With back-to-back kills, Christensen and Hatchett opened scoring for the second-straight set, but Seattle stayed close – accounting for three ties by the 7-7 mark. Fiaseu put down a kill and served up an ace over the next two plays to retake the Falcons' lead, but the Redhawks responded to even the set at 12. After seeing a four-point lead (16-12) shrink to one (16-15), the Falcons turned up the heat and closed out the set on a 9-2 run. Christensen and Fiaseu each tallied a pair of kills and teamed up for a block during the run, while Bible's second kill of the set-closing stretch secured Air Force's 25-17 win.
Bible picked up right where she left off in the third, putting down the opening point and adding another during an early 7-1 run that gave Air Force a 9-3 advantage. Fiaseu and Walker both tallied kills during that opening stretch, while Christensen put down a kill to give Air Force a 13-8 lead and force Seattle to use its second timeout of the set. Suan served up another ace coming out of the break (15-8), while an ace from sophomore Kiera King saw Air Force double up the Redhawks by an 18-9 margin. Fiaseu and Loyd teamed up a pair of blocks during a 7-1 stretch that closed out the set and gave Air Force another dominant victory (25-11).
The Falcons' 3-0 sweep marked the program's first victory over Seattle in four tries and, with its third win in as many days, Air Force matched their overall win total from the 2024 season.
Air Force returns to action next weekend, when it travels to Annapolis, Nd., for the Kristen Dickmann Invitational. The Falcons will open the three-day tournament against service academy rival Navy at 6:00 p.m. (ET) on Friday, Sept. 5.
