NEW ORLEANS -- Patrick Hoopes' history-making season continued this evening, as the recent Air Force graduate captured the national title on the pommel horse at the 2025 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championship – and secured a spot on Team USA for the upcoming World Championships.
Hoopes kicked off the national meet in New Orleans with a stellar 15.775 performance on Thursday, Aug. 7 – a Night 1 score (6.000 difficulty, 9.050 execution, 0.725 bonus) that led the 44-gymnast pommel horse field by more than three-tenths of a point and was the highest score of the night in any event. In addition, his 15.775 score helped Squad D – a lineup consisting of Hoopes and a contingent of gymnasts from Stanford – to the team title in the meet's first-ever Senior Men's Squad Showdown.
The native of Lehi, Utah, followed up with a 15.525 performance (6.000 difficulty, 8.800 execution, 0.725 bonus) during Night 2 of the championship meet on Saturday, Aug. 9. As one of just two gymnasts to break the 15-point barrier during the second night of action, Hoopes finished the competition with a 31.300 score – a total that bettered the field by more than two tenths – to claim the national pommel horse title.
Following the competition, Hoopes was named to Team USA for the upcoming World Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta this October. Hoopes, who medaled in three of his four international assignments this year, will be joined on the world championship team by Brandon Dang (Illinois), Asher Hong (Stanford), Brody Malone (EVO), Kameron Nelson (Ohio State), and Donnell Whittenburg (EVO).
