USAF ACADEMY – Seniors Gabriella Hartley (gymnastics) and Mason McCormick (hockey) have been selected as the Air Force Academy's Captains of Captains for the 2024-25 season. Hartley is the first member of the women's gymnastics team to serve as a Captain of Captains. McCormick is the fourth straight hockey player to serve in that role.
The Captains of Captains program is in its third season and is a key component and enabler of the Team Captain Enhancement Program (TCEP), the athletic department's premier cadet-athlete leadership development program for USAFA's intercollegiate (IC) team captains. Among several key responsibilities, the Captains of Captains will serve on the cadet wing staff as the single voice of advocacy for IC issues at the cadet wing's "Top 47" meeting. Additionally, they will assist the TCEP in working to continuously grow and strengthen a winning culture and warrior ethos among the IC teams.
In partnership with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Chair, the Captains of Captains will champion communication, integration, collaboration, and awareness with the goal of increasing cadet wing spirit and advancing the Academy's mission.
Hartley, from Clemont, Fla., competed seven times in 2025, showing in all seven meets on uneven bars and six times on balance beam. Hartley scored a season-high 9.800 on balance beam at Boise State (Feb. 28). Competing on bars for the first time in her career, the then-junior put up a 9.750 at 2025 Mountain West Championships (March 22). A behavioral science major, Hartley, currently serving as a flight commander is a two-time Athletic Director's list honoree for excellence in physical education.
McCormick, a center from Verona, Wisc., was an assistant captain for the Falcons last season. He played in 35 games and had five goals and five assists. Last season, he won 298 faceoffs, second most on the team, and ranked among the league leaders with a 52.3 faceoff winning percentage. McCormick is a three-time member of the Atlantic Hockey all-academic team. A management major with a minor in global logistics, he has been on the Dean's and Athletic Director's Lists at the Academy. He has played in 107 career games and has 17 goals, 16 assists, three power-play goals and five game-winners.
