U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force and Army skated to a 0-0 overtime tie in an Atlantic Hockey America game Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Cadet Ice Arena. Army won the shootout, 1-0, to earn the extra point in the AHA standings. It was the final regular-season home game for the Falcons.
It was Air Force's first scoreless tie after regulation since a 1-0 overtime win over RIT, Feb. 26, 2022. It was the first scoreless tie after regulation against Army since 1-0 double overtime win over the Black Knights, March 11, 2018, in the AHA quarterfinals at West Point.
At the end of regulation, Army had outshot Air Force, 28-26. In the five-minute, three-on-three overtime, Air Force outshot Army, 6-2, but the game ended in a 0-0 overtime tie. In the second round of the shootout, Army's Dylan Wegner scored for a 1-0 lead. Army goalie J.J. Cataldo did not allow a goal in the three-round shootout for the shootout victory.
Air Force outshot Army, 32-30, in the game. Air Force was 0-for-2 on power play and killed Army's lone man-advantage. Cataldo made 32 saves for the Black Knights. Air Force goalie Dominik Wasik earned his third career shutout and made 30 saves.
"This was a very intense game that had a playoff feel," head coach Frank Serratore said. "The stars of the game were the two goaltenders. Cataldo and Wasik were both great. In the series this season, we each earned six points, but we had the better record at 2-1-1, so our seniors go out with a winning record against Army. You don't often say a 0-0 game is exciting, but this one was. Tonight we took a step in the right direction because we didn't beat ourselves. We need to take another step in the right direction going into the No. 1 team's barn this weekend at Bentley."
Air Force concludes the regular season at Bentley, Feb. 27-28, in Waltham, Mass. Bentley has already clinched the AHA regular season title while Air Force sits in seventh place in the conference.
