Air Force managed to overcome a season-best 196.100 from San Jose State, ending Sunday's meet scoring a 196.100 – But the Spartans were stonewalled in the final standings, as Air Force's record finish proved good to score the win. UC Davis closed the evening in third place (192.825). Following its second record-breaking finish this month, Air Force improves to 13-7 on the season and 3-2 in against Mountain West opponents.
In the all around, junior and reigning Mountain West Gymnast of the Year Maggie Slife earned her eighth all around title on Sunday afternoon, finishing the evening with a 39.575 – A score good for the second-best all-around score in Academy history, eclipsing her previous record set at the Metroplex Challenge in Fort Worth on Feb. 14. Slife closed the SJSU tri with sole possession of first on both bars (9.900) and beam (9.925), a share of the top spot on floor with teammate Alysa Bigler (9.925) and a second-place finish on vault (9.825). Bigler ended the evening scoring a 39.275 as an all-arounder, marking both a season and career high for the sophomore.
Air Force and San Jose State were tied for an early lead after the opening rotation after the Falcons opened the afternoon scoring a 49.950 on uneven bars. Chelsea Boyer set the tone for the Falcons in their first event, scoring a 9.825 to earn a career best and her second career 9.800 or better to finish with a share of third place. Slife, in the anchor position, landed a full-twisting double back, scoring a 9.900, good lift the Falcons to the top bars score of the day.
Air Force harnessed its energy from the first event to post an all-time performance on balance beam, scoring a 49.325 to dwarf the Falcons' previous all-time score of 49.150 earned in 2004. Hits across the lineup on beam highlighted Air Force's evening; Freshman Erin McDermott and senior Gabriella Hartley both scored season/career bests, finishing with a pair of 9.850s to lay a strong foundation. Sophomore Anna Bacott kept up the momentum, tying her career best and earning a 9.875. Alyssa Bigler landed a 9.825 and Slife anchored, resetting her career high to score a 9.925 and tie the all-time program score on the apparatus. The Falcons' seismic performance was good to pull Air Force into a lead halfway through the afternoon.
On floor, Air Force amassed a season high scoring a 49.275 to finish with the top score of the evening in the event. A pair of 9.925s from both Slife and Bigler proved good to earn the Falcon duo each a piece of the podium. Seniors Gracie Willis and Kylee Greene followed up, both scoring a 9.850 (tied career high) and 9.800, respectively.
The Falcons closed Sunday scoring a 48.750 on vault. Raife, as consistent as can be, earned her third-consecutive 9.800 to tie her career best in back-to-back meets. Slife's second-place 9.825 to end the evening led Air Force scoring in the Falcons' final rotation.
Head Coach Jennifer Green on the Falcons' Steep Rise and Their Potential:
"We've shared gyms recently with a lot of elite talent. When you can go into big environments against ranked teams and hang with them, it instills a lot of confidence and it certainly has for us. Even so, this team has so much talent and is capable of so much more. I wouldn't say our team has peaked yet - Our main focus has been building off of each meet. These meets are continual building blocks as we work towards the Mountain West Championships and beyond."
