GAME 04
Air Force (1-2) at Siena (2-1)
10 a.m. ET, Tuesday, February 24
Afrim's Sports Park (indoor), Colonie, N.Y.
Wintry Weather
Tuesday's matchup, originally scheduled to be played Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Hickey Field, has been moved up to a 10 a.m. start time on Tuesday indoors at Afrim's Sports Park in Colonie due to wintry weather.
The game will no longer be streamed. There are two sets of bleachers with roughly 75 seats on each sideline so seating will be limited.
A Brief History
It has been 14 years since the teams last met. Air Force controls the all-time series, 5-2, but lost the last two meetings in 2011 (7-6) and 2010 (5-2). The last time the teams played in Colorado was in 2007. Air Force is undefeated against Siena at USAFA but is yet to win outside of the home nest.
A Look at the Saints
Siena will take the field under the command of Tim Cox in his first season as head coach. The 32-year-old Cox, whom Gleason promoted to associate head coach back in September, served as the Saints top lieutenant and offensive coordinator since his hiring back in August 2018. Overall, Cox has spent a decade in the collegiate coaching ranks, including previous stints at Robert Morris (2017-18) and UAlbany (2016).
Cox helped guide Siena to its most successful season in a decade this past spring, culminating in the program's fourth Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament Championship. The Saints achieved an 11-5 overall record and claimed a share of the MAAC regular season title with a 7-1 league mark. Siena earned the program's first national ranking in 14 years, checking in at No. 20 in both the USILA Coaches' Poll and Inside Lacrosse KANE Media Poll on May 5.
Siena capped a big week by garnering two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) weekly awards as voted on by the conference's sports information directors on Monday. Senior goalkeeper Vito DeBellis and junior midfielder Patrick Radomski was among the recipients after Siena's 14-5 victory versus Binghamton last Tuesday. Radomski, the Massapequa, NY native produced a monster game with a career-high 10 points with six goals and four assists. He also collected a ground ball as Siena improved to 2-1 on the season. DeBellis, a product of Yorktown Heights, NY, saved 11 shots and allowed just five goals to pick up the win in 56 plus minutes of action for a .688 save percentage.
D-UP!
After three weeks of play, Air Force is second in the NCAA in caused turnovers per game (13.33). Senior LSM Cole Cunningham is third in Division I CTOs with 3.33 per game while freshman defender Jack Gounaris is sixth in the NCAA with 3.00 CTOs per game. The Falcons also have the seventh best opponent clearing percentage in the NCAA (.766).
Making a Name
Freshman attacker Christian Schweiger is a force to be reckoned with in the early season. A native of Lebanon, New Jersey, Schweiger leads the Falcons with seven goals and five assists so far this season. He has two hat tricks in three appearances, including a three-goal game against No. 10 Ohio State.
A Look Ahead
The Falcons continue the fight in New York and will take on Marist on Saturday, February 28. Action at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field is scheduled for noon ET. Air Force is on a four-game winning streak against the Red Foxes dating back to 2018. Marist has yet to beat Air Force on their home field.
Last Time Out
A late Air Force rally came up short in the 14-9 loss against No. 10 Ohio State, February 14, at Falcon Stadium. AF freshman attacker Christian Schweiger had a career performance, scoring six points on three goals and three assists, marking his second hat trick this season and season high assist count. Schweiger has scored a goal in every game so far this year. He led the team with a game-high eight shots. For the third time in as many tries, Air Force outshot the opponent, this time taking 35 (22) shots to the Buckeyes' 33 (20).
