DENVER – Air Force was held to just a pair of scores in the 10-2 loss to in-state rival, Denver, Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The Falcons equal out at 1-1 while the Pioneers improved to 2-0.
DU held Air Force to their lowest scoring output since losing to Sienna, 5-2, in 2010. Denver, outscoring opponents 30-3 in the first two games, was held to just one goal in the first quarter.
The first Falcon to score was freshman standout Christian Schweiger via assist from C4C teammate Jack Gounaris 10 seconds into the second quarter. Air Force went quietly for a 34-minute scoring drought while the Pios tacked on seven goals. The Falcons broke the drought at 10:09 of the fourth quarter as Henry Spencer scored his first collegiate goal in an unassisted attack.
Senior team captain and AF goals leader Caelan Driggs took a career high 12 shots but was unable to find nylon, snapping a 20-game goal scoring streak. The Falcons outshot the Pios, 44-37, but DU took 22 shots on goal to AF's 16.
Sophomore goalie Matt Deedy made a career high 12 saves in the effort, five of those saves in the first quarter. Sophomore faceoff man Rogan Kane had a career day as well, winning six faceoffs in 13 shows. He scooped up two ground balls to help AF to 26 total ground balls, two more than DU.
The Falcons caused 11 of Denver's 18 turnovers. Linchpin defenders Jack Gounaris and Charlie Pyfer were credited with three and two CTOs, respectively. Air Force LSM Cole Cunningham caused two turnovers and picked up a team high six ground balls.
Denver's Watt Muir scored the only hat trick of the day while teammate Marek Tzagournis posted a five-point game with four helps and a goal. DU goalie Grayson manning was exceptional, making 14 saves with just two goal allowed.
Next up, Air Force returns to Falcon Stadium to host Ohio State on Saturday, February 14. Action at the Academy is scheduled for 11 a.m. A broadcast will be available on ESPN+ and live stats will be available at GoAirForceFalcons.com
