Air Force is 5-10 against Duke all time and has lost the past three meetings. The Blue Devils have won by 10, 12 and five in those matchups. This will be the first time Duke has played at Air Force and the first time the Blue Devils have played in the state of Colorado since winning at Denver in 2020. The Falcons have downed the Blue Devils three times since 2016, winning in 2016, 2017, and 2020 in Durham. Each game was decided by a one-goal difference.
A Look at Duke
The Blue Devils will take the field under the command of coach John Danowski in his 20th year. Dino has led Duke to three national championships, three Tewaaraton winners, four ACC tournament titles and 149 All-America honors. The Blue Devils are 5-0 and No. 4 in the USILA poll, fifth in USA Lacrosse rankings and 8th by Inside Lacrosse.
Junior Benn Johnston paces the offense with 20 goals and two assists for 22 points. Kyle Colsey is right behind him with 12 goals and six assists for 18 points, while the trio of Brady Scioletti, Thomas Mencke and Max Sloat pace the midfield with 16, 15 and 13, respectively. Mencke has a team-high 11 assists.
The Blue Devils' stalwart defense is proving why it's considered one of the best in the country, holding teams to 7.40 goals and to just 31.8 shots per game. Charlie Johnson (9),
Henry Bard (8), Aidan Maguire (6) and Will Pedicano (6) have combined for 29 caused turnovers and 44 ground balls. Johnson leads the charge off the ground with 13 ground balls. In goal, Patrick Jameison has a 6.60 goals against average and a .588 save percentage.
Rough Start
The Falcons are on a four-game skid since their season-opening win on February 1 and are averaging just 7.74 goals in those four losses. Despite the turbulence, Air Force tends to bounce back well, turning three of the last four losing starts into winning seasons in the ASUN Conference.
Making a Name
Freshman attacker Christian Schweiger is a force to be reckoned with in the early season. A native of Lebanon, New Jersey, Schweiger leads the Falcons with 10 goals and seven assists so far this season. He has three hat tricks in four appearances, including a three-goal game against No. 10 Ohio State.
A Look Ahead
Another lacrosse powerhouse is coming to the Academy as Syracuse takes on Falcons on Thursday, March 12. The visit marks first time the Orangemen have made the trip to USAFA. Gametime is slated for 3 p.m. MT.
D-UP!
After five games, Air Force is 13th in the NCAA in caused turnovers per game (10.00). Senior LSM Cole Cunningham is eighth in Division I CTOs with 2.40 per game while freshman defender Jack Gounaris is 27th in the NCAA with 1.80 CTOs per game. Cunningham averages 5.40 ground balls per game, a mark that ranks him top five among ASUN players.
