LONG BEACH, Calif. – Air Force senior Texas Tanner set the American Collegiate Record in the hammer throw this afternoon (April 18), as he led a small contingent of field event athletes on the opening day of competition at the Beach Invitational in California.
Tanner launched a career-best distance of 78.87 meters (258'9") to win the 58-thrower event by more than three meters. Tanner, who first reset his own Mountain West/Service Academy/Air Force Record with a 76.03-meter throw on his fourth-attempt, crushed that mark one throw later – dropping the hammer at a distance that served as the best throw ever by an American-born collegiate and the best throw by any collegiate since Balazs Kiss in 1995.
With that throw, Tanner became the No. 2 hammer thrower in NCAA history – one week after achieving the same distinction in the discus throw.
Elsewhere in the field, sophomore Barrett Boyd used a career-best clearance of 3.62 meters (11'10½") to improve her own No. 21 placement on the program's pole vault standings and finish third in the open section of the event, while classmate James Vogel Jr. earned a runner-up finish in the men's pole vault with a 4.80-meter (15'9") clearance.
Sophomore Trenton Groff became the 25th thrower in program history to surpass the 200-foot mark in the javelin, as he recorded a career-best distance of 201'3" (61.36m) to debut at No. 25 in the Air Force Record Book and place within the top half of the overall results (14th). In the women's javelin, freshman Cadee Alder recorded a throw of 45.80 meters (150'3") to finish eighth in a field of 42.
The Falcons' distance squad will continue competition tonight at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, while the sprint and field event athletes will be back at Jack Rose Track tomorrow (April 18) for the final day of action at the Beach Invitational.
