Air Force beats Gonzaga, 2-1

Freshman Raegan McDowell had two assists and goalkeeper J.J. Wolf turned back several late flurries as Air Force beat Gonzaga, 2-1, at the Academy's Cadet Soccer Stadium.
Each team scored early in the game. Gonzaga scored first when Annie Hawkins scored an unassisted goal 12 minutes into the contest. Just one minute later, the Falcons tied the score. Mary Cholko's first goal of the season came from McDowell in the 13th minute. Air Force controlled play late in the first half, but the score remained knotted at the intermission. AFA out-shot the Bulldogs, 10-2 overall and 6-1 on goal, in the first half.
A fast-paced second half saw the teams combine for 24 shots, 15 on goal. AFA took a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute. McDowell's shot from just inside the penalty box was saved by Bulldog keeper Ashley Haugen as she was sliding toward the right post. Falcon freshman Meredith Benson collected the rebound 12 yards out and scored to the upper far corner.
Gonzaga rallied late with several prime scoring chances. Hawkins had three quality shots on goal in the final 20 minutes that were all saved by Wolf. One was punched over the cross bar and two others were caught from point-blank range.
Air Force out-shot Gonzaga, 21-15 overall and 14-8 on goal, in the game. Wolf made seven saves, all in the second half. Haugen had 12 saves for the Bulldogs.
Air Force improved to 1-1 on the season while Gonzaga fell to 0-1. Air Force is now off until Sept. 6 when the team travels to St. Louis, Mo., for the annual Service Academies Classic. The Falcons face Navy on Sept. 6 at 5 p.m. and Army on Sept. 8 at 9 a.m. MST. Gonzaga faces Iowa State at the Academy's Cadet Soccer Stadium, Monday, Sept. 1, at 11 a.m.
