The Air Force women's basketball team suffered 74-61 home loss to Regis in a preseason exhibition game Friday night at Clune Arena. Freshman Letricia Castillo, playing in her first career collegiate game, notched 21 points, but it wasn't enough, as the team could never recover from an early deficit.
The Falcons fell behind early, scoring just two points in the first 11 minutes. Despite shooting just 1-of-12 in that span, the team trailed by just seven points thanks to a solid defense. The teams headed to the locker rooms with Regis leading 23-15.
"We knew our defense would be ahead of our offense at this point," head coach Ardie McInelly said. "We implemented the motion offense in the off-season. It takes time for players to learn a new offense."
Castillo ignited the offense in the second half with two clutch three pointers. She finished the game shooting 8-of-10 (80 percent) from the field. Jennifer Roesch added 12 points, while Briana Thomas had 10 rebounds.
"Castillo did an outstanding job reading the defense and taking what they were giving her," McInelly said. "When a freshman playing just 18 minutes scores over 20 points, it's a real lift for your team."
Senior Amoy Jackson, playing in her first game since the 2001-02 season, had four points and eight steals. Freshman Dawn Higgenbotham, who hails from Colorado Springs, was 4-of-6 from the charity stripe. Both teams looked rusty. Air Force committed 25 turnovers, while the Rangers notched 24. The Falcons finished the game shooting 22-of-56 (.393).
The Falcons will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 11th, for the second exhibition game. They take on UCCS at Clune Arena, with tip off set for 7 p.m.
