LINCOLN, Neb. - Junior Jacob Schonig won the still rings and sophomore Garrett Canter set an Academy record on the pommel horse, as the Air Force men's gymnastics team wrapped up the regular season with a 353.650-335.100 decision to Nebraska on Saturday, March 22, in Lincoln's Devaney Center. The Falcons' combined score of 335,100 was the third-best of the season.
Schonig's winning tally of 15.650 is the second-best mark in Academy history, falling just .050 shy of the program record. Canter improved his career-best mark by nearly .500, as he scored an Academy-record tally of 13.800. That score is a program standard by .200, breaking the previous mark that was set at their last meet.
Senior Greg Stine, who finished second on the high bar with a score of 14.550, was the Falcons' top scorer on the floor exercise and parallel bars. He tallied a score of 14.500 to take sixth on the floor, while posting 14.250 on the parallel bars. In addition, he tied for fifth on the still rings (14.650).
Classmate Brian Boardman was the top Air Force scorer on the vault. With a fourth-place score of 14.850, Boardman was one of four Falcons to score within the top six. Freshman Aaron Zaiser finished fifth with a 14.200, while junior Josiah Loeser and sophomore Brennan Wolford tied for sixth with matching tallies of 14.150.
Fellow senior Tyler Sickles, who placed sixth on the parallel bars with a score of 14.050, was the top-scoring Falcon on the high bars, as he finished fifth with a total of 14.000. Canter rounded out the "top-six" Falcons with a sixth-place mark of 13.750 on the high bar. Like he did on the pommel horse, Canter's score on the high bar was a .500 personal improvement.
The Falcons open the post-season next weekend (March 29-30), as they travel to Springfield, Mass., for the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships.
