Air Force Places Third at Salbasgeon Suites Invitational

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Air Force women's gymnastics team opened the 2010 season this evening (Jan. 8) with a third-place finish at the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational in Corvallis, Ore. Facing two teams ranked among the nation's top 15, as well as a conference opponent, the Falcons combined for 184.475 points to finish third in the four-team meet.
Oregon State, ranked 10th in the GymInfo Preseason Coaches' Poll, won its home opener with a score of 195.625, while No. 13 Illinois took second with a score of 192.850. Air Force placed third with 184.475, edging out Mountain Pacific Sports Federation foe, Alaska-Anchorage, by one point (183.475).
Sophomore Jenna Dudley was the top-scoring Air Force gymnast in the individual events, en route to a fourth-place total of 38.875 in the all-around. Dudley's best event finish came on the balance beam, as she tied for eighth with a score of 9.525. She also earned a top-10 finish on the floor exercise, scoring a 9.600 to place 10th. Dudley just missed a top-10 finish on the uneven bars, as she finished 11th with a score of 9.700 and also tied for 15th on the vault with a score of 9.550
Junior Brittany Dutton, who tied for eighth on the balance beam with Dudley (9.525), also picked up a top-10 spot in the all-around, placing eighth with a total of 37.200. In addition, Dutton posted the team's second-highest score on the vault, placing 17th with a mark of 9.525.
Senior Michelle Denise was the Falcons' second-highest scorer on two events, placing 14th on the uneven bars (9.575) and 16th on the floor exercise (9.300). In her first collegiate meet, freshman Tara Harris posted a score of 9.400 to place 11th on the balance beam.
The Falcons get a little closer to home next weekend, as they travel up Interstate-25 for the Denver Winterfest Classic on Saturday, Jan. 16. The Falcons will take on No. 17 Denver and No. 17 Penn State at Hamilton Gym on the campus of DU.
