Air Force Sweeps Event Titles to Down Arizona State

TUCSON, Ariz. - Backed by first-place finishes on all six events, the 12th-ranked Air Force men's gymnastics team defeated Arizona State 340.950-330.300 in a neutral site meet in Tucson, Ariz., on Friday, March 19. Junior Nash Mills picked up a pair of event titles, as well as the all-around title, to pace the Falcons to their third team victory in as many meets.
Mills won the still rings with a career-best matching tally of 14.800. He also won the high bar with a score of 14.150. Backed by additional top-five finishes on the pommel horse (13.300, fifth) and vault (15.400, third-tie), Mills won the all-around title with a combined score of 84.450.
Sophomore Joel Uptmor scored a 15.700 to win the vault, while freshman Travis Langham placed first on the floor exercise with a career-best 14.650. Sophomore Chase Nobles took first on the pommel horse with a score of 14.300 and junior Matthew Thorne rounded out the Air Force sweep with a winning tally of 13.800 on the parallel bars.
In addition to his win on the vault, Uptmor was the runner-up on the high bar (14.000) and tied fourth on the floor exercise (14.550).
Dan Klimkowski placed within the top three during each of his four events. The junior tied for second on the floor exercise (14.550), while earning the placement outright on the still rings (14.700). He also placed third on the pommel horse (13.800) and tied for that spot on the parallel bars (13.700).
Junior Aaron Zaiser earned a fourth-place score of 13.600 on the parallel bars, while Langham earned a pair of fourth-place marks on the still rings (13.850) and vault (15.400, tie). Freshman Alex Jessop earned a top-five finish on the parallel bars, as he scored at 13.400 to place fifth. Senior Garrett Canter picked up a fifth-place tally of 13.700 on the still rings, while sophomore Devin Menefee earned the same placement on the vault with a score a 15.300.
Air Force opens the championship portion of the season on Friday, March 26, when it hosts the 2010 USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships at the Academy's Cadet West Gym.
