FAIRBANKS, Alaska. -Alaska-Anchorage never trailed in the game and beat Air Force, 4-1, in the second round of the Brice Alaska Goal Rush Tournament, Saturday, Oct. 18, at Carlson Center, in Fairbanks, Alaska. UAA improved to 3-0-1 overall this season while Air Force fell to 1-3.
Just over two minutes into the game UAA's Tanner Johnson was called for a five-minute major for checking from behind and the Falcons went on the power play. Air Force did not get a shot on goal on the five-minute power play and it was the Seawolves that got on the board. On a 3-on-2 short-handed rush, Dylan Hubbs scored from the slot on a centering pass from Chase Van Allen.
UAA took a 2-0 lead midway through the second period. The Seawolves won a stick battle on the boards and Hudson Friesen found Matt Anholt in front at the 9:00 mark of the second period. Air Force got on the board late in the second period on the power play. Chad Demers won a faceoff in the offensive zone and Phil Boje moved the puck across to Cole Gunner on the right point. Gunner found A.J. Reid on the back door for a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle. Reid's team-leading third goal of the season came at 17:08.
Early in the second period, Air Force had just killed a penalty but the Seawolves scored shortly after the penalty expired. Anthony Conti made a centering pass to Van Allen who was wide open in the slot for a 3-1 UAA lead at 2:28. With 4:37 left in the third and a faceoff in the offensive zone, the Falcons pulled their goaltender and the Seawolves scored just 24 seconds later as Brett Cameron scored at 15:47.
Air Force outshot UAA, 24-22, in the game. AFA was 1-for-6 on the power play while UAA was 0-for-3.Chris Truehl made 18 saves for the Falcons while Olivier Mantha made 23 for the Seawolves.
"It was a disappointing weekend and a frustrating night," head coach Frank Serratore said. "Anchorage is a hard-working, well-coached team. Early in the game, we had that five-minute major and if you are a good team, you capitalize and we didn't. Entering the third period, we had a chance to win both games and didn't get it done. There is not a lot to feel good about. Our detail was a little better tonight, but not much. We all need to be better … coaches, players … everyone. We'll go back to work and get ready for RIT next weekend."
Air Force returns home for a two-game Atlantic Hockey Association series, Friday-Saturday, Oct. 24-25, at 7:05 p.m. MT each night at Cadet Ice Arena.
