NORMAL, Ill. - The Air Force women's gymnastics team dropped a 194.225-191.850 decision to Illinois State on Friday, Feb. 20, in Normal, Ill. The loss snapped the Falcons' two-meet winning streak, but marked the fifth-straight week that the Falcons have broken the 190-point plateau.
Backed by a runner-up finish from freshman Jamie Lewis, the Falcons collected four of the top-six placements in the vault standings. Lewis recorded a score of 9.750 for the fourth time in six meets to finish second, while senior Jessica Wallander and sophomore Kara Witgen finished third (9.700) and fourth (career-best 9.625), respectively. Freshman Julia Sebben rounded out the quartet with a sixth-place score of 9.550.
With a career-best matching score of 9.825, Wallander claimed an event title on the floor exercise for the second straight week, as she tied for first on that event. She was one of three Falcons to finish within the top half of the field, as Witgen and senior Alexandra Stych recorded matching scores of 9.725 to finish in a four-way tie for third.
In addition to her win on the floor, Wallander also led the team on the uneven bars, tying for fifth with a 9.725. Junior Shannen Kelly earned the same placement on the balance beam, scoring a season-high score of 9.750 to lead the team on that event.
The Falcons remain on the road next week (Feb. 27), when they travel to Seattle, Wash., for a rematch with Seattle Pacific.
