AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -Air Force and RIT skated to a 2-2 overtime tie in an Atlantic Hockey Conference matchup Friday, Feb. 5, at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena.
The Falcons (13-9-5, 11-5-5 AHC) extended their unbeaten streak to nine games (6-0-3) in head coach Frank Serratore's 700th appearance with Air Force. RIT (12-10-5, 12-5-4) extended its unbeaten streak to eight games (5-0-3).
Senior forward Ben Carey scored twice in the second period, as the Falcons took a 2-1 lead into the final frame. However, Tigers' Chase Norrish scored the only goal of the third to force the overtime session and seal the 2-2 final.
After a scoreless first, Carey lit the lamp for Air Force just 1:06 into the middle frame. Sophomore defenseman Dylan Abood chased down a loose puck in the defensive zone, spurring a shorthanded 3-on-2 counterattack. Abood skated the puck the length of the ice and then fed Carey for his rocket from the high slot. The Tigers evened the contest 43 seconds later on the very same power play. Sophomore Myles Powell lifted the puck from the edge of the goal crease past Air Force goaltender Shane Starrett. Erik Brown slipped him the puck off of defenseman Greg Amlong's long blast from the center point.
Carey's second of the night came at 15:28 of the second period during 4-on-4 play. Junior defenseman Johnny Hrabovsky raced the puck into the RIT zone and landed it on the blade of Carey's stick as he was charging the net. Carey tapped home his seventh of the year to once again put Air Force ahead. Then, midway through the third, the Tigers added another power play goal to knot the contest at 2-2 and force the extra session. RIT moved the puck around the offensive zone, and Brady Norrish fed his brother Chase in the right circle for his one-timer to tie the game.
The game ended in a stalemate, as neither team was able to convert during the overtime period.
Starrett turned aside 20-of-22 in net for Air Force, while Christian Short went 22-of-24 for RIT. The Falcons were unsuccessful on two power play attempts. The Tigers were 2-for-2.
"Our commitment to blocking shots on our penalty kill was poor," head coach Frank Serratore said. "The out-special teamed us. They imposed their will on us in setting up their one-timers on their power plays. I was very disappointed that we gave up those two power-play goals. We have given up three straight power play goals going back to last week and that has to change. We had a game-saving save by Shane Starrett late when they had a guy open on the back door or this could have had a different outcome."
Air Force and RIT will close out their season series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Cadet Ice Arena.
