USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force women's gymnastics team registered a season-high score 191.475 during its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener with 24th-ranked Sacramento State (193.150) this evening (Jan. 21) at the Academy. Senior Kara Witgen led the Falcons with a first-place finish on the vault.
The senior co-captain registered a career-best score of 9.800 to win the vault, marking the second time in as many home meets that a member of the Falcons' program has earned the top honor on that event. Freshman Anna Salamone, who won the home opener earlier this season, tied for second with a personal-best tally of 9.775, while junior Jamie Lewis and sophomore Mariana Murphy recorded matching scores of 9.750 to finish in a three-way tie for fourth (season-best score for Lewis, career-best mark for Murphy).
Air Force also accounted for three of the top-five scores on the floor exercise. Junior Casey Bell finished second with a 9.775, while Lewis scored a season-high 9.725 to finish third and Witgen posted a 9.675 to tie for fifth.
Murphy, who finished second in the all-around with a score of 38.125, shared the Falcons' lead on the uneven bars with classmate Brittney Reed. The pair tallied matching season-best scores of 9.700 to tie for third and round out the list of Falcons that finished within the top half of the field. Witgen was the Falcons' top finisher on the balance beam, as she tallied a 9.675 to finish seventh.
The Falcons head to Shreveport, La., next weekend, when they face Centenary on Sunday, Jan. 29.
