
Falcons Drop Conference Contest to San Jose State

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force women's gymnastics team picked up a pair of first-place finishes this evening (Feb. 18), as it closed out the home portion of its 2017 season at the Cadet West Gym. The Falcons registered a score of 193.225 – their second-highest team total of the season – during its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest against San Jose State (194.950).
Freshman Anna Salamone won the vault with a career-best matching score of 9.775, while sophomore Riley Hill tied for first on the balance beam with a mark of 9.825. In addition to their respective event titles, the pair also finished within the top half of the 12-gymnast field in a second event. Hill improved her career-high on the vault by 0.125 points to tie for fifth (9.725), while Salamone registered a 9.650 to finish sixth on the uneven bars.
Senior Kara Witgen earned a pair of runner-up finishes during her final home competition at the Academy, as she matched her career-high of 9.850 on the floor and scored a 9.750 on the vault. Witgen led the Falcons to three of the top-four scores on the floor, as juniors Casey Bell and Jamie Lewis tied for third with matching scores of 9.825 (career-high for Lewis). Sophomore Mariana Murphy, who finished second in the all-around with a 38.625, was the Falcons' top finisher on the uneven bars (fourth, 9.700), while freshman Rita Koenigbauer rounded out Air Force's list of top-six finishers with a career-best matching tally of 9.775 on the beam (sixth).
With its home season complete, Air Force heads out on the road for its final seven meets. The Falcons begin the run with a pair of East Coast matches next weekend, as they travel to New Hampshire on Friday, Feb. 24, and Bridgeport on Sunday, Feb. 26.
