The Falcons knocked off Colorado Mesa and Mines, while falling to Vanderbilt
USAFA, Colo. – The Air Force Academy women's swimming and diving team wrapped up its busy week with a 2-1 day in a quad-meet, Saturday afternoon, Oct. 20, at Cadet Natatorium. The Falcons knocked off Colorado Mesa, 161.5-137.5, and the Colorado School of Mines, 228-59, while falling to SEC foe Vanderbilt, 151.5-135.5.
"Our team has raced five of the last eight days, and we stepped up every time and raced well," Head Coach Colleen Murphy remarked. "This team has risen to the challenge each and every time, and this can only lead to what will be an amazing season."
Out of the 16 events, the Falcons had four wins, to go along with three runner-up finishes, as well as a top-three finish in 13 of the 16 overall.
Leading the way, as she has so often to start the season, was junior Esther Min, who claimed two more wins in both fly events. She clocked in with a 57.75 in the 100 to take first, while also taking gold in the 200 fly with a 2:10.24.
In the final event of the afternoon, the 200 free relay, the squad of junior Autumn Wolfgramm, sophomore Sadie Wilson, freshman Lia Campbell, and Min took first with a 1:36.65, which was about two second faster than the second place team.
The fourth event victory came over on the diving board, as freshman Krystal Irwin led all divers in the 3-meter with a total score of 250.13.
AF's first runner-up effort came in the first event of the day, as in the 200 medley, the Falcons took second with a 1:45.36. The other two came from individuals, as sophomore Kylie Stronko came in second in the 100 back with a 58.30, while junior Shayle Finnesand took second in the 100 breast with a 1:07.15.
After the flurry of activity over the past week, the Falcons take a well-deserved break from competition, as their next event is not until November 2-3, a tri meet with Grand Canyon and Northern Colorado. The two-day event begins that Friday the 2nd at 5 p.m.
