Air Force Concludes 2018 Season at Colorado College
The Air Force Academy women's soccer team concludes its 2018 campaign when it heads just down the road to take on inner-city rival Colorado College, Friday afternoon, Oct. 26. Kickoff against the Tigers at Stewart Field is set for 3 p.m. The match will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network. It can also be followed via live stats or on Twitter, @AF_wsoccer.
Hiddink Sets a New Conference Record
Senior goalkeeper Jennifer Hiddink officially cemented herself as one of the all-time best to play in the Mountain West Conference this past weekend. With with her six saves against SDSU, Oct. 21, Hiddink became the all-time leader in career saves in MW Conference history with 343 stops. The previous record of 338 had stood since 2010. On top of that, her 5.82 career saves per game average currently ranks fourth in MW annals.
Hiddink The Brick Wall
For the 2018 season, senior goalie Jennifer Hiddink continues to be one of the top keepers in both the conference and country. She is currently leading the Mountain West in saves per game (6.13), and, total saves (98) while ranking second in save percentage (.831). Her total saves are 13th in the NCAA, while her saves per game are 21st and her save percentage is 55th. In addition, Hiddink is 10th among active goalies in career saves (343), as well as 12th in career saves per game (5.82) among active netminders.
With two more saves this match, Hiddink will become the first Falcon goaltender since J.J. Wolf in 2002-03 to have 100+ saves in back-to-back seasons.
Moving Up The Record Book
Senior Jennifer Hiddink has had an outstanding Air Force career, and because of that she finds herself near the top of the Falcon record book in numerous categories. The veteran netminder is second in Air Force history in career saves with 343. In addition, the Wylie, Texas native is second in goals against average (1.28), third in shutouts (13), while also ranking fourth in wins (17), and GK minutes (5325).
At Least It's Not A Loss...
With Air Force tying six matches this season, they have set a new program record for draws in a season, with the previous season-high being four back in 2006. On the season, Air Force is one of three Division I women's soccer team with six ties this season, with the others being Army West Point and Montana. The six draws in a single season also ties a Mountain West Conference record, which has happened twice in the conference's 20 year history (New Mexico, 2008/San Diego State, 2004).
Hiddink a Senior CLASS Award Finalist
Senior goalie Jennifer Hiddink has been named a finalist for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award, announced, Wednesday, Oct. 17. Hiddink is one of 10 Division I women's soccer players who are being recognized for their work both on and off the field, and the only candidate representing the Mountain West Conference.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The finalists were chosen by a selection committee from the list of 30 women's candidates announced in September. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner through November 18, 2018. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner. The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup® championships later this fall.
Last Time Out
The Falcons had a tough final two match weekend, as they fell to both New Mexico and San Diego State by multi-goal margins. The final tally against the Lobos was 2-0, while SDSU ran away with four second half goals in a 5-0 decision. These were the first multi-goal defeats in conference play for the Falcons this season.
Opponent Connections
With the two schools sharing the same city limits, it comes as no surprise there are a handful of connections between the two. Two players from each side shared high schools, starting with local products, freshman Micah Larkin for the Falcons and sophomore Jade Odom for the Tigers. Both are Colorado Springs natives, and both attended Pine Creek High School. The other comes from out of state, as Air Force junior Kasey Stavig and CC sophomore Riley Prillwitz are both from Portland, and are former teammates at Sunset High School. Finally, CC senior defender Rachael Martino went to high school on base, attending Air Academy High School.
20th Season in the Mountain West
2018 marks Air Force's 20th season as a member of the Mountain West Conference after being one of its charter members back in 1999. In 19 seasons, Air Force holds a 58-136-19 mark in conference matches.
