Falcons Fall to Wyoming in Five

Abigail Miksch led all players with 16 kills during the Falcons' first road match in a month.
LARAMIE, Wyo. – Playing its first road contest in over a month, the Air Force volleyball team suffered a five-set loss to Wyoming this evening (Oct. 4) in Laramie. After winning the first two sets (25-22, 25-23), the Falcons were unable to hold off the Cowgirls' comeback, as the host team captured the final three sets 25-20, 25-23, 15-12.

Senior Abigail Miksch led all players with 16 kills, while classmates Elizabeth Pennington and Lauren Heldt added totals of 11 and 10, respectively. Pennington added four service aces, while sophomores Andi Ahlers and Cambria Galloway led the team in assists (26) and blocks (five), respectively. Junior Denise Ssozi rounded out the team's statistical leaders with 18 digs.

Wyoming scored the first five points of the match, but the Falcons roared back, scoring 11 of the next 12 points to force the Cowgirls into burning both timeouts by the 11-6 mark. Pennington registered two service aces and a kill during Air Force's run, while Heldt (two), Galloway (one) and Miksch (one) also accounted for kills. The Cowgirls used a 7-2 run to even the set at 13, but Air Force retook the lead on the next play and extended their advantage to four (18-14) following service aces from Miksch and Anders. Scores from Ssozi and Heldt put the Falcons at 20 (20-16), while Miksch, Heldt, Ssozi and sophomore Kathleen Medill recorded kills to give Air Force the 25-22 win.

Pennington opened the second set with a kill and the two squads traded the next several points, with Galloway (2-2), Miksch (3-3) and Medill (4-4) accounting for equalizing points. Ssozi tied the set at seven and Galloway evened things again at 10, while Medill recorded blocks on back-to-back plays (one with Heldt, one with Miksch) to tie the score at 13. A kill by Ssozi and a Medill/Pennington block evened the set at 15, while a service ace from sophomore Alex King gave the Falcons at 17-15 lead. Air Force maintained its two-point lead (18-16) following another Medill/Pennington block, but Wyoming scored the next three points to take a 19-18 advantage. Ssozi tied the set at 19, while a pair of errors by the Cowgirls tied the score for Air Force (20, 21). Kills by Heldt gave the Falcons the lead (22-21, 23-22), while back-to-back kills from Ssozi and Pennington secured the 25-23 victory for the Falcons.

Wyoming jumped out to a fast 8-1 lead, before Pennington registered the Falcons' first offensive point of the set (2-8). Galloway teamed up with Heldt for a block and added a kill, but the Cowgirls doubled up Air Force at the 12-6 mark. Air Force crept back into the set, with Pennington (kill, ace), Galloway (block) and senior Shanleigh Conlan (ace) brought the Falcons within two (15-17). Miksch put down three straight kills to tie the set at 17 and give Air Force its first lead of the set at the 18-17 mark. Air Force held a one-point lead at 19-18, but Wyoming scored the final seven points to take the set by a 25-19 margin.

Wyoming tallied five of the next six points, but a Medill kill and a Ssozi/Galloway block helped Air Force tie the set at seven. Heldt put down a kill to bring the Falcons back within one (10-11), while another Pennington ace evened the score at 11. The Cowgirls scored four-straight points and sent Air Force into a timeout down five (14-19). The Falcons came out of the break on a 6-1 run that included two blocks from Galloway (one solo, one with Heldt), a service ace from Ssozi and a kill from Pennington that tied the set at 20. Pennington and Miksch tallied kills that tied the set at 23, but Wyoming earned the final two points for 25-23 victory.
