Walker Sommer and Marshall Bowery scored in the exhibition game
U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force rallied back from a two-goal deficit for a 2-2 overtime tie with Alberta, in a college hockey exhibition game, Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
In a scoreless first period, Air Force outshot Alberta, 16-3. However, the Golden Bears came out in the second period and scored two goals in the first 2:42. Exactly 60 seconds into the second period, the Falcons turned the puck over in their own end and Steven Owre scored on a rebound for a 1-0 lead. Tanner Clarkson gave the Golden Bears a 2-0 lead at 2:42 when he redirected a shot by Ryan Rehill.
The Falcons got on the board at 11:25 when Walker Sommer skated the puck down the left wing and took it behind the net. His shot, from a sharp angle at the bottom of the right circle, cut the Alberta lead to 2-1.
Midway through the third period, the Falcons tied the game on the power play. Shawn Knowlton fed Trevor Stone down the right side and Stone saw Marshall Bowery skating down the slot. Stone's centering pass was right on the tape and Bowery put it away at 7:08 to tie the game.
"We weren't very tough to play against," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We need more competitive snarl in our game. We probably didn't deserve to win the game. Billy had to make a lot more difficult saves than their goalie did. We got a tie because we have a great goalie. We have to play better against Denver and Colorado College and we will play better."
Air Force senior goalie Billy Christopoulos made 30 saves in the game. Kenny Cameron made 36 for the Golden Bears. Air Force was 1-for-2 on the power play while Alberta was 0-for-2. The Falcons outshot the Golden Bears, 38-32.
Air Force hosts ninth-ranked Denver on Friday, Oct. 12, in the regular-season opener at 7:05 pm at the Cadet Ice Arena. The Falcons will then travel south on I-25 on Saturday, Oct. 13, to face Colorado College at 7:05 pm.
