Air Force women’s basketball fell to Denver, 92-66, in a Veteran’s Day match-up
Denver, Colo. - Three-pointers were the name of the game for Denver as the Pioneers shot 55-percent from the arc, outscoring the Falcons, 92-66, in a Veteran's Day match-up, in Hamilton Gymnasium. Air Force, who dropped to 1-2 following the loss, had trouble scoring from beyond the arc, going 2-16 on the game.
The Falcons were led by their young veterans Emily Conroe and Kassady Huffman. Conroe recorded a season-high 13 points while Huffman registered Air Force's first double-double of the season with 12 points and a season-high 11 boards. The 6-2 forward out of Colorado Springs also led the team with four blocks. Conroe was the only Falcon to hit from beyond the arc (2-5). Sophomore team captain, Kaelin Immel, continued to put up steady numbers, registering seven points and five boards on the day.
Air Force freshmen continued to expand their contributions as Tanisha Elbourne and Cierra Winters made their debut appearances. Elbourne, a native of Chevy Chase, Maryland, showed promise as she recorded seven points, two assists and picked a team-high four steals in 11 minutes of action. Winters registered a bucket in her two minutes of action.
Freshman standout Briana Autrey recorded nine points on the day, going 5-8 from the field. She averages 11.7 points per game this season. Riley Snyder, who has started in all three of the Falcons' contest this season, had an off day on the scoring side but managed to wrangle in five rebounds to tie her season-best. Haley Jones continues to put up stead numbers as well, picking up seven boards and five points, marks right around her season averages.
Senior team captain Venessannah Itugbu was perfect from the free throw line (4-4) while also recording five boards and two steals.
Air Force out-rebounded Denver, 52-42, and had more than double than double their steals (13-6). In summation, the game boiled down to shots from the field. The Pioneers shot well over their season averages while the Falcons shot well below. The Pios' Lauren Loven was x-factor as she recorded a game-high 25 points, going 7-9 from down range, while continually deflating Air Force scoring runs.
Air Force returns home next week to take on Fairleigh Dickinson, Friday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. MT.
