
Falcons Claim 10 Titles in Regular Season Finale

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- With two improvements to the Academy record book and 10 first-place finishes, the Air Force track and field team capped off the regular season this evening (May 4), as it hosted the annual Air Force Twilight Open at the Cadet Outdoor Track and Field Complex.
Junior Jerni Self became fourth Academy pole vaulter to break 13 feet in outdoor competition, as she cleared 13'0¼" to help Air Force to a one-two finish in that event (junior Kathryn Tomczak, 13'4¼"). Classmate Liz Jarvis debuted in 10th on the program's all-time standings in the javelin throw, as she posted a personal-best clearance of 143'8" to lead Air Force to a 1-2-3 finish in that event. Senior Cortney Porter, competing in just her fourth collegiate javelin throw, registered the program's 11th-best distance (143'1") to take second, while sophomore Sierra Rodriguez finished third with career-best 140'10".
The women also accounted for multiple top-three finishes in the high jump and 1500-meter run. Senior Shelley Spires (5'10¾") and freshman Hannah Nance (5'5") finished first and third, respectively, in the high jump, while freshmen Shay Stayton (4:58.21) and Sarah Bodmer (5:10.86) earned the same placements in the 1500-meter event.
Sophomore Ashley Cameron clocked a wind-impeded time of 15.18 to take second in the 100-meter hurdles, while junior Andrea Abel recorded a wind-aided distance of 37'8" to take third in the triple jump and freshman Meghan Carbiener earned the same placement in the hammer throw after adding more than five feet to her personal-best distance in that event (160'9").
Backed by first-place marks from junior Logan Feasline and senior Donny Crabill, the men picked up a pair of 1-2-3 sweeps in the throwing events. Feasline posted a distance of 168'10" to win the discus throw, while Crabill recorded a season-best throw of 209'0" to take first in the javelin. Senior Jackson Spalding and junior Garrett Coalson finished second (162'0") and third (160'6"), respectively, behind Feasline in the discus, while senior Luke Piper finished second (205'6") and freshman Parker Spearman took third (203'0") in the javelin. Coalson (54'2½") and Spalding (52'2¾") added a one-two finish in the shot put, while senior Brooks Hardy rounded out the throwers' run at top-three finishes by placing second in the hammer throw with a distance of 172'6".
Air Force collected one-two finishes in the long jump (senior Calvin Berstler at 21'2¾"; senior Jake LaCoste at 20'9¼") and 1500-meter run (sophomore Patrick Sullivan in 3:55.71, freshman Scott Johnson in 3:56.24), while senior Zac Petrie (1:52.45) and junior Preston Roche (1:53.62) finished first and third, respectively, in the 800-meter run. In addition, senior Robbie Anderson collected a first-place finish in the 200-meter dash (21.52) and sophomore Connor Stevens was the top collegiate finisher in the pole vault (16'5½", third overall).
Junior Micah Fontaine and Berstler placed second (14.61) and third (15.08), respectively, in the 110-meter hurdles, while senior Tyler Koss (400-meter dash in 46.18), junior Sam Hinegardner (high jump at 6'6¾") and sophomore Anthony Davis (triple jump at 47'5", wind-aided) earned runner-up honors in their respective events and junior Reece Pontious finished third in the 100-meter dash (11.13).
The championship season begins for the Falcons next week, when they squad travels to Clovis, Calif. For the 2018 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The four-day event begins with the opening events of the decathlon and heptathlon on Wednesday, May 9.
