Air Force Concludes Non-Conference Slate With Pair of Home Games
The Air Force Academy women's soccer team wraps up its 2018 non-conference schedule by hosting a pair of games at Cadet Soccer Stadium, starting with a match against the University of Houston, Thursday, at 6 p.m. That will be followed by a Sunday afternoon match against Gonzaga University at 1:30 p.m., which will be the second leg of a doubleheader with the men's team, who face Harvard at 11 a.m.
Last Time Out
Air Force battled to a scoreless draw against Army West Point Friday evening, Sept. 7, at Malek Stadium. Senior goalie Jennifer Hiddink recorded the 10th shutout of her career while recording nine saves. The Army offense peppered shots at her all night, as the Black Knights recorded 23 total. Air Force's offense managed eight shots on the evening, four of them on net. Senior forward Taylor Cobb had two shots on goal coming from headers off of corner kicks. The Falcon's also played a more disciplined match in the draw, only recording three fouls to Army's 17.
Hiddink The Brick Wall
Senior Jennifer Hiddink has had an outstanding Air Force career, and because of that she finds herself near the top of the Falcon record book in numerous categories. The veteran netminder is fourth in Air Force history in career saves with 275. She is 12 saves behind Kristy Kuhlman for third place all-time, and 90 away from breaking the program record of 364 set by Steph Jardine. In addition, the Wylie, Texas native is fifth in GK minutes (4155), and shutouts (10), while also ranking fourth in wins (16), and second in goal against average (1.34).
Among The Nation's Best
In addition to the career program marks, Hiddink is also seeing her name among the nations elite. This season, Hiddink's 7.50 saves per game ranks 10th in the country, while 0.833 save percentage is 66th, and her 30 total saves are 92nd. In terms of active career leaders, Hiddink's 275 saves ranks 16th among active goalies, while her 5.85 saves per game are ninth.
Rookies Racking Up The Minutes
With nine freshmen joining the roster entering the season, and thanks to some injuries to key upperclassmen, rookies have seen plenty of action over the first four games. Five freshmen have combined to make 12 starts so far, while freshmen have accounted for 1,056 of the teams 4,141 combined minutes (25.5 percent).
Scouting Houston
The Cougars enter the week sporting an even 4-4 record. While they are a perfect 3-0 at home, Houston is only 1-4 in true road matches thus far this season. UH gets its fair share of shots on net, averaging 15.88, and that has resulted in a fair amount of goals, totaling 13. They are led by junior forward Desiree Bowen who has four goals on the year. The goal keeping duties have been split between senior Rachel Estopare and junior Samantha Cude. Estopare is 1-3 with 23 saves and seven goals against, while Cude is 2-1 with eight saves and just two goals against.
Scouting Gonzaga
The Bulldogs come into Colorado with a 3-2-1 record. They will play Thursday at Colorado State before heading down to the Academy. The Zags are also undefeated at home (2-0), while holding a 1-2-1 mark on the road. They also have a potent offense, as they rank 26th in the nation in shots per game (18.83) and shots on net per game (8.67), but it has yet to result in much production as they only have six goals. Redshirt junior India Jencks leads Gonzaga with three goals, as well as an assist. In net, redshirt sophomore Isabel Jones has seen a majority of the minutes, notching 18 saves while allowing seven goals for a GAA of 1.11.
Opponent Connections
There are plenty of opponent connections this weekend, starting with Air Force assistant coach Missy Strasburg facing off against her Alma Mater, Gonzaga. Strasburg played for the Bulldogs from 1997-2000 as a four-year starter. She graduated in 2001 with her degree in marketing. The Falcons have six players from the state of Texas, the second-most of any state on the team, however none of them are from the greater Houston area. Despite that, Air Force senior Alejandra Reveles and Houston redshirt junior Madison Fulp were high school teammates at Cedar Ridge High School in Round Rock, Texas. In addition, Cougars freshman defender Cassidy Formanek is from Denver and attended Evergreen High School. Finally, Gonzaga freshman midfielder Haley Archuleta is from Highlands Ranch, the same hometown as Keelyn Osoba and Erin Speer, however all three attended different high schools.
