Three players from Air Force women’s basketball scored in the double-figures, led by Riley Snyder’s 20 points
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Air Force fell to the 20th-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers, 81-54, Sunday afternoon in Thompson-Boling Arena. The Falcons, now 1-7 on the season, had three double-figure scorers but were unable to keep up with the abundantly tall Lady Vols who remain undefeated in the 2019-20 campaign (7-0).
Riley Snyder posted a game-high 20 point performance, setting a season-high mark while falling just two points shy of her career-high mark. She has six double-figure scoring performances so far this season. Snyder had another highlight night at the free throw line, knocking down 4-4 attempts for her sixth perfect game from the line this season. The native of Fruita, Colorado, also collected six rebounds and added an assist and a steal to her stat line.
Junior co-team captain Kaelin Immel was the second leading scorer for the Falcons, notching 13 points, tallying a personal season-high five assists while also adding three rebounds to her stat line. Sophomore teammate Haley Jones tied her season-high scoring mark, tallying 10 points while also tying for a game-high nine rebounds, falling just short of a double-double for the third time this season. Jones also picked off four steals on the game.
Freshman guard Allyah Marlett also made her presence known against the NCAA's most-winning program, snatching four steals while scoring seven points and collecting five boards. Marlett averages five points and five rebounds per game this season.
The Falcons out-rebounded Tennessee, 40-39, becoming the first team this season to collect more single-game rebounds than the Lady Vols. Air Force also shot 29-percent from the field, a mark slightly greater than the average of all Tennessee opponents so far this season.
Tennessee had no shortage of scorers as five Lady Vols posted double-figure scoring marks led by Rennia Davis and Rae Burrell's 18 points apiece. Davis also dished out five assists and collected nine boards, tying Air Force's Immel and Jones for the game-high marks, respectively. The height of the Lady Vols was prevalent in points scored in the paint as the Tennessee lineup combined for 56 points down low.
The Falcons came out competitive in the first quarter, holding the lead for two minutes in the first quarter highlighted by a five-point scoring run. Air Force trailed by one, 12-11, at the media timeout (3:58). Riley Snyder shot 100-percent in the quarter, knocking down a field goal, a three ball and a pair of free throws to bring her first quarter total to seven points. Three Air Force freshman recorded over five minutes of action and at one point held four Air Force positions on the court.
Snyder continued to shoot perfect into the second as the sophomore forward drained her second three-pointer to open the quarter. The Lady Vols responded with a 6-0 run over the following four minutes. Snyder shot perfect up to the media timeout (4:52) while sophomore teammate Haley Jones was leading the team with five rebounds. Air Force struggled to manage the offensive possessions, turning the rock over 14 times in the first half.
The Lady Vols hit a hot streak to open the second half, going on a 6-0 run to buffer their lead early in the half. Marlett and Jones slowed the Lady Vols with a 5-0 scoring run but were unable to muster more. Immel jolted Air Force with a smooth jumper in the final seconds of the quarter but the Falcons still trailed by 24. The game didn't improve for either team in the final quarter as the Falcons posted their worst shooting numbers of the game, hitting 23-percent of attempts from the field while only scoring nine points in the final 10 minutes.
Next up, the Falcons return to the Academy to host Wyoming in the Mountain West Conference opener, Wednesday (Dec. 4) at 6:30 p.m. in Clune Arena, USAFA. Following Wednesday's contest, the Falcons take flight for another three-game road stint.
