FULLERTON, Calif. - Air Force dropped its final road contest of 2019 to Cal State Fullerton, 79-70, Saturday afternoon in Titan Gym. The Falcons, who scored a season-high 70 points, drop to 2-10 while the Titans improve to 7-5.
Air Force was led by Kaelin Immel and Briana Autrey-Thompson who both shot over 60-percent while scoring individual season-highs of 26 and 21 points, respectively. The performance marked the first time Air Force has had two 20-point scorers in a single game this season. Immel, who picked off a game-high and season-best five steals, now has three 20-point performances, 10 double-figure games, and averages 15.2 points this season. Autrey-Thompson rounded out her stat line with three steals and a pair of assists and rebounds.
Emily Conroe led the Falcons in rebounding with seven while teammates Haley Jones and Allyah Marlett snatched four and three boards, respectively. Marlett, who leads all Air Force freshmen in scoring this season, scored six points while Jones tallied five.
The Falcons' defense was noticeably disruptive, picking off 15 steals and helping Cal State Fullerton turn the ball over 28 times, which Air Force then converted into 27 points. Both teams shot significantly greater than their season averages; the Falcons, 40-percent from the field and the Titans, 59-percent.
Cal State Fullerton was led by Raina Perez who notched a double-double with 31 points and 11 assists. Teammate Carolyn Gill collected a game-high 13 rebounds while scoring nine points. Three Titans posted double-figure scoring marks.
Air Force got off to a strong start, racing out to an early 5-0 lead, scoring five of their first seven points off of CSUF turnovers. By the end of the first quarter, Air Force held a 14-8 lead while the Titans turned the ball over 11 times. Briana Autrey-Thompson led the Falcons with five points.
The Titans cut the lead to two after going on a 4-0 scoring run out of the first-quarter break. Kaelin Immel propelled Air Force to a 20-14 lead, the largest lead of the half, draining two-straight three-pointers. The Titans answered with a 7-0 scoring run to take the lead, 21-10. At the end of the quarter, CSUF led Air Force, 29-26. Immel led the Falcons in first half scoring with 10 points while Autrey-Thompson had nine.
The Titans continued to pace the Falcons out of the halftime break, opening with a 6-0 run to build a nine-point lead. Air Force cut the lead to five with a 4-0 scoring run of their own but CSUF quickly rebuilt the lead with a three-ball in response. The teams exchanged scoring runs up to the close of the quarter where the Titans had an 11-point lead, 55-44. Immel and Autrey-Thompson continued to lead the scoring effort with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
Air Force was unable to track down the Titans as CSUF built its largest lead of the game in the fourth quarter (14, 3:56), maintaining a comfortable lead against the attacking Falcons. Riley Snyder, who was uncharacteristically scoreless through the first three quarters, dropped four points in the final quarter, hitting just 2-17 field goal attempts on the game. In the waning seconds of regulation, Immel broke through two ceilings, scoring her personal season-high (26) while pushing Air Force over 68 points, a high-mark the Falcons had hit three times this season.
Next up, Air Force closes out 2019 at home as the Falcons host Nebraska-Wesleyan on Monday (Dec, 30) at 6:30 p.m. MT, in Clune Arena, USAFA. The game will mark the first meeting between the programs.
