Both 4x4 teams impacted the program's top 10, while Tomczak won the pole vault in Meet Record fashion.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The men's and women's 4x400-meter relays impacted the Academy's all-time standings and senior Kathryn Tomczak broke her own Meet Record in a winning pole vault performance this afternoon (Feb. 9), as the Air Force track and field team wrapped up competition at the Texas Tech Shootout in Lubbock.
The men's quartet of senior Sedacy Walden, sophomore Zachary Dicken, junior Michael Rhoads and sophomore Luke Zuluaga combined for a 4x400-meter relay time of 3:11.30 – the fourth-fastest time in Air Force history – as they finished fifth in the 17-team event. The performance came just minutes after the women's lineup of senior Aryn Maxwell, junior Megan Irvine, junior Kelsey Owens and freshman Brid O'Connell debuted in the seventh on the program's all-time standings with a season-best time of 3:52.10
Tomczak registered a season-best clearance of 14'0" to win a jump-off with Texas Tech's Chloe Wall and claim the event title. The pair finished the regular competition with matching clearances of 13'6¼", but Tomczak easily won the jump off with a clearance of 14'0". With the second 14-foot indoor vault of her career, Tomczak also broke her own Senior Class Record and easily reset the Texas Tech Shootout Record of 13'8¼" that she set last year during a winning performance at last year's meet.
The senior's victory paced the Falcons to four top-10 finishes in the pole vault on Saturday at the Sports Performance Center. Freshman Corey Friedenbach posted a career-best clearance of 12'6½" to finish sixth in the event, while senior Jerni Self and freshman Erika Willis placed eighth (12'6¼") and ninth (career-best 12'0 ½"), respectively.
A pair of Falcons – sophomore Tyler Gurchiek and freshman Matthew Walters – used career-best clearances in the pole vault to finish within the top five of the heptathlon. The pair, who tied for third in the day's second event with matching heights of 14'7¼", earned top-five finishes in the two-day event. Gurchiek registered a career-best score of 4564 points to finish fourth, while Walters notched a personal- best tally of 4494 to place fifth.
Senior Garrett Coalson and sophomore Addyson Smith collected eighth-place finishes in their respective shot put events, as Coalson tallied his second-best throw of the season (52'0¾") in the men's "A" event and Smith tallied the second-farthest throw of her career (40'9¼") in the women's "B" event.
Junior Terrell Bradford and senior Miguel Molas placed within the top half of a stacked 200-meter field, as Bradford posted a time of 21.64 (16th) and Molas registered a mark of 21.83 (23rd).
The Falcons return to the Academy next Friday (Feb. 15) to close out the home portion of the indoor season with the Air Force Collegiate Open. The meet, a final tune-up before the conference championship, is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. (MT).
