Falcons Host DBU in Non-Conference Series
- The Air Force Academy baseball team returns home for a three game non-conference weekend series against Dallas Baptist, March 22-24. The Falcons and Patriots will square off for the return trip of a home and home series. Start times at Falcon Field will be 3 p.m. on Friday, 1 p.m. on Saturday, and noon on Sunday.
Following Along At Home
- The games against the Patriots can be followed via live stats on Statbroadcast, as well as via a live stream on the Mountain West Network. All games can also be tracked live on Twitter, @AF_Baseball.
Last Time Out
- The Falcons went 0-2 in a midweek series at Nebraska, falling 7-6 in the opener and 12-3 in the finale.
- In game one, the Falcons trailed 4-0 early, but took a lead in the seventh, only to fall in the late innings.
- Air Force was only out-hit, 21-19, in the series
Lone Star State Connections
- Air Force has eight players on its roster from the state of Texas, the most of any state on the team
- Three players on the AF and DBU rosters attended the same high school
- Tyler Mortenson and Luke Trahan (College Park HS)
- Daniel Jones and Daniel Gaither (Coppell HS)
- Gabe Martinez and Kyle Rich (Keller HS)
Trio of Goose Eggs
- Air Force has recorded three shutouts this season, already surpassing its total from last season (2).
- The Falcons are one of just 31 teams with three or more shutouts this season, and the only in the MW Conference.
Ace Pitching Staff
- The Air Force pitching staff has been close to lights out to start the season, as they rank top three in the conference in fewest runs, hits, walks, and home runs allowed, while ranking fourth in team ERA (4.60).
- Three individual pitchers have sub-2.00 ERAs in Matt Hargreaves (1.20), Jake Gilbert (1.37), and Nathan Price (1.46).
- Gilbert's ERA ranks 59th in the nation
- The late inning arms have got it done as well, as the Falcons are 9-0 when leading after six innings.
Run, Falcons, Run
- The Falcons have been active on the base paths to start the year, having stolen 33 bags so far
- The 33 steals ranks second in the conference and 43rd in the country.
- Junior Ashton Easley has 12 swipes to lead the conference, and rank 25th in the nation.
- Against Northern Colorado, March 12, Air Force stole 10 bags, the most in a single game for AF since May 4, 1979.
Don't Run on Dau
- Senior captain catcher Rob Dau has always had a knack for throwing out would-be base stealers, as he has been top-five in the conference in that category all three seasons, including leading the league as a sophomore in 2017. This season, he has thrown out seven and picked-off four to lead the league in both categories.
Doubles Machine
- Senior Nic Ready has nine doubles to begin the season to lead the team
- The nine doubles rank tied for second in the MW and 22nd in the NCAA
- Ready is 12 doubles away from breaking the school record
The Price is Right
- Freshman RHP Nathan Price has burst onto the scene for the Air Force Falcons to start the season, as the youngster is a perfect 3-0 in his first four outings, with a 1.46 ERA in 12.1 innings.
- Price is holding opponents to a .205 batting average, and he has four strikeouts to just one walk.
- Against No. 14 ECU, Price went the final 5.0 innings in relief, only allowing two hits and one run, while striking out a pair.
Active Career Leader
- With such a successful career to this point, it shouldn't come as much surprise that senior Nic Ready is among the NCAA active career leaders in multiple categories. The Texas is the active career leader in doubles (66), while ranking second among active players in total bases (456), third in RBIs (192), and fifth in home runs (39).
California Schools Can't Handle the Cold
- So far this Mountain West Conference season, Air Force has had five of its home games against California schools postponed, two to San Diego State and three to Fresno State
- The final two games of the series against SDSU were called due to cold weather. Saturday's game was in the bottom of the second when it was called. SDSU was leading 2-0 at the time.
- All three games of a weekend series against Fresno State were called off after the Bulldogs didn't travel to Colorado following a "Bomb Cyclone."
- These games may be made up when AF travels to each respective school later in the season.
On the Horizon
- Air Force plays another two-game midweek series when it heads to California to take on Pacific, Tuesday-Wednesday, March 26-27.
