Senior Nic Ready tied the program RBI record with an run scoring single
STOCKTON, Calif. – The Air Force Academy baseball team got back in the win column with a solid 6-2 win over Pacific, Wednesday evening, March 27, at Klein Family Field. Air Force (10-11) got excellent pitching, along with a few clutch hits, to tie the midweek series with the Tigers (13-12).
The Falcon pitching staff was excellent, as sophomore Luke Chilcutt earned his first win of the season after tossing 3.1 scoreless innings in relief, only allowing one hit and one walk. Behind him, junior Shawn Kelley tossed the final two frames, also scoreless, while striking out a season-best four batters.
At the plate, Air Force had ten hits on the evening, with two-hit days from three players. Senior Nic Ready had two knocks, including a double and RBI single. He now has 195 RBIs for his Air Force career, which ties the program record. Junior Tommy Gillman added a two-RBI double as well.
The Tigers struck first with a run in the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Meanwhile the Air Force couldn't get the bats going over the first four innings, keeping it 1-0 into the fifth.
In the fifth, Air Force capitalized on a Pacific miscue to take their first lead of the game. With two outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd, a passed ball on a strikeout allowed a runner to score, making it 2-1 and extending the inning.
Ready then followed with an RBI single to tie the school RBI record, as well as tying the game. The Falcons weren't done yet, though, as Gillman doubled to the gap in right center to score two, and make it a 4-2 Air Force lead at the midway point.
From there, Chilcutt carved up the Tiger lineup, tossing scoreless fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to preserve the lead into the eighth. In the eighth, Air Force got some insurance as a senior Drew Wiss RBI triple, followed immediately by a senior Gabe Martinez squeeze bunt, put two more runs on the board.
Kelley then entered in the bottom of the eighth, and picked up where Chilcutt led off, striking out the side in a scoreless frame to send it to the ninth. In the ninth, Kelley allowed a single, but a 5-4-3 double play ended the game with the four run victory.
Air Force returns to Mountain West Conference play this weekend, when it heads to Reno, Nev. to take on the Nevada Wolfpack for a three game set. Game one is set for a 5 p.m. MT start time, Friday, March 29.
