USAF Academy, Colo. - Air Force came up short of a comeback against Mountain West Conference foe UNLV, falling to the Lady Rebels, 67-60, Saturday afternoon in Clune Arena. The Falcons drop to 3-11 on the season with a 1-2 mark in the league while UNLV improved to 6-8 overall with a 2-1 record in conference play.
Sophomore guard Haley Jones led the Falcons with a career-high 17 points on the night. The native of Torrance, California, also snagged six rebounds and a game-high four steals on the day. The scoring performance marked Jones' third double-figure game this season.
Junior teammate Emily Conroe posted her sixth double-figure scoring performance with 10 points while adding six rebounds and three steals to her stat line. Freshman teammate Allyah Marlett collected a team-high nine rebounds while adding four points and a steal to her stat line.
Air Force scoring leaders Kaelin Immel, Riley Snyder and Briana Autrey-Thompson were uncharacteristically off the mark, combining for 32 field goal attempts in which they collectively knocked down four, for a 13-percent field goal accuracy between the three.
UNLV's Leticia Smith led the Lady Rebels with 20 points, three assists, three steals and three boards. Smith shot 77-percent from the field on the game. Teammate Rodjanae Wade dropped 14 points and collected a game high 12 rebounds for the only double-double performance of the day.
UNLV got off to a strong start with an 8-0 scoring run. Air Force's first three points were scored at the line with no field goals, until 3:22 remaining in the first quarter where Nikki McDonald drained a three-pointer off the far wing. Shortly after Grace Hess knocked down a three-ball to cut the Lady Rebels' lead to 18-9. The Falcons ended the quarter trailing, 23-12, while shooting 25-percent from the field.
Early in the second quarter, Hess cut the UNLV lead to nine for the second time with her second three-ball, but Air Force was in the shooting doldrums thereafter, shooting just 15-percent from the field at the media timeout. At the half, Air Force trailed 37-26, shooting just 23-percent from the field. Free throws may have been the difference in the game as the Falcons shot just 43-percent from the line in the first half, missing more than half of their 14 attempts in the first half.
Haley Jones led the Falcons in the first half with 10 points and five rebounds. UNLV's Latecia Smith paced the Rebels with 16 points, shooting 80-percent.
The theme of the first half carried into the second half as both teams struggled with hitting shots. The Falcons came as close as nine points in the third quarter but were not able to cut the lead any closer. In the fourth quarter, Air Force got within seven points of the lead but was unable to track the Rebels down any further. Although free throw shooting improved in the second half, seven missed second-half attempts was the difference in the final score. The Falcons shot just 51-percent from the free throw line on the day.
Air Force totaled 14 steals and helped UNLV to 21 turnovers but only converted 17 points off of turnover scoring opportunities.
Next up, the Falcons hit the road to take on the Utah State Aggies, Wednesday (Jan. 8) at 7 p.m. in Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, Logan, Utah.
