Late rally falls short in loss at AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. AIC built a 2-0 lead and then held off Air Force for a 2-1 win in an Atlantic Hockey Association game Saturday, Nov. 28, at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield, Mass.
AIC (2-0 overall, 2-0 AHA) struck first as Aaron Grounds scored at 5:47 of the first period. Midway through the second period, AIC had some 5-on-3 power-play time and converted. Just after one of the penalties expired, the Yellow Jackets scored on a 5-on-4 power play as Chris Theodore scored at 12:39 for a 2-0 lead.
Early in the third period, the Falcons went on the power play and netted the first PPG of the season. Sophomore defenseman Brandon Koch's shot was blocked by a Yellow Jacket, but sophomore Willie Reim collected the loose puck. His first two shots were saved, but his third found the back of the net at 6:10. Reim's first of the season, seventh of his career, was also assisted by Marshall Bowery. With 2:41 left in the third and down a goal, the Falcons pulled the goalie in favor of the extra attacker. In the final 2:30, Air Force had three shots blocked by Yellow Jacket defensemen and three others that were saved as AIC held on for the win. Air Force outshot AIC, 12-3, in the third period.
AIC outshot Air Force, 24-22, in the game. The Falcons were 1-for-7 on the power play while AIC was 1-for-5. Alex Schilling made 22 saves for the Falcons while Stefano Durante had 21 for the home team.
Air Force (0-2 overall, 0-2 AHA) returns home for a two-game conference series against Robert Morris, Friday-Saturday, Dec. 4-5, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
