Air Force will face the top-ranked Sooners for their first meet of the season.
The Air Force men's gymnastics team returns to action tomorrow (Jan. 23) night, when they head to Norman, Okla., to face the top-ranked Sooners at 6:00 p.m. (CT). The contest, a rematch of the last week's season-opening Rocky Mountain Open, is slated to be broadcast on Fox Sports Oklahoma.
LET'S MEET THE FIELD
Oklahoma currently leads the NCAA after tallying a 414.450 at the Rocky Mountain Open, while Air Force posted the nation's fourth-highest score – 384.100 – during the first week of the 2021 season. The Sooners lead the NCAA on the floor exercise (Gage Dyer, 14.850), while the Falcons' Garrett Braunton is ranked second on the high bar with a 13.950.
AIR FORCE IN THE RANKINGS
After the first week of the season, Air Force has two gymnasts listed among the nation's top five. Garrett Braunton is ranked second on the high bar following a season-opening performance of 13.950, while Allen Shadan is listed fifth on the parallel bars (13.750). As a team, the Falcons posted the third-best mark of the weekend in the parallel bars at 67.00 and the fourth-best score on the pommel horse (63.750).
BRAUNTON WINS THE HIGH BAR
Garrett Braunton claimed first-place honors on the high bar at the Rocky Mountain Open on Jan. 16, becoming the third Falcon in five years to capture that event at the annual RMO competition, joining Lukas Texeira (2019) and Chase Cannon (2017). Braunton is also just the sixth Academy gymnast in the last 21 years to win any event at the season-opening RMO, joining Texeira, Cannon, James Okamoto (2011 pommel horse), Jake Schonig (2008 still rings) and Aaron Jackson (2003 floor exercise).
WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE FALCONS
Air Force is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 13, when it travels to West Point, N.Y., to face its counterparts from Army and Navy at the annual All-Academy Championships.
