
Air Force travels to AIC

This Week: Air Force (5-9-2, 3-5-2 AHA) travels to Springfield, Mass., for a two-game Atlantic Hockey series against the AIC Yellow Jackets (4-9-1, 4-4-0 AHA), Saturday- Sunday, Jan. 1-2. Saturday's game is at 7:35 pm ET while Sunday's game starts at 4:05 pm ET.

Killin' It: The Air Force penalty kill is among the best in the nation recently. The Falcons have killed 33 straight opponent power plays, a new school record and the longest active streak in the nation. Over the last nine games, the kill is at 93.3 percent (42-of-45). Most recently, Air Force killed all 11 in a two-game home series against Canisius, Dec. 3-4. The previous school record of 31 was set in the 2000-01 season. Air Force has a recent history of one of the top penalty kill groups in the nation. The Falcons led the nation in 2018-19 (88.9) and in 2016-17 (school record 89.7). Air Force also finished 10th in 2017-18 and 11th in 2015-16.
About the Yellow Jackets: AIC is 4-9-1 overall this season and 4-4-0 in Atlantic Hockey. The Yellow Jackets haven't played since a split at Canisius, Nov. 26-27. A series against UConn, Dec. 9-10, was postponed due to COVID protocols in the UConn program. AIC has split each of its four league series. The Yellow Jackets went 0-5-1 in a difficult non-conference schedule against No. 5 Quinnipiac, No 9 UMass.-Lowell, No. 12 Providence and No. 20 Boston College. Brian Regali leads the team with 10 points. Jake Stella leads the team with six goals. Jake Kucharski has started nine games in goal and has a 2.99 GAA and a .898 saves percentage.
Series vs. AIC: Air Force and AIC have played 46 times and the Falcons hold a 34-8-4 lead in the series that began in 1980. As Atlantic Hockey rivals, the teams have played 38 times and Air Force has a 26-8-4 lead in the league series. Air Force has won just two of the last nine games in the series (2-5-2). Last season, Air Force opened the season at AIC in the COVID shortened season. AIC swept the series in Springfield, 3-1 and 2-1. AIC has won three straight in the series. Air Force has lost four straight in Springfield with the last Falcon win coming on Jan. 24, 2015.
