The freshman clocked a time of 3:59.28 during his first collegiate race in the mile.
AMES, Iowa – Breaking the famed four-minute barrier in his first race at the mile distance, Air Force freshman Cole Lindhorst set a new Academy record this afternoon (Feb. 13), during an impressive outing at the Iowa State Classic.
Lindhorst, who had competed at the 800-meter distance during two previous meets this year, had no trouble with the transition to the mile – posting a time of 3:59.28 to finish second among collegiate runners, third overall, and the only freshman in the top seven. Lindhorst, who became just the second Falcon to record a sub-four time – and the first to do so with a raw mark, deleted 0.49 seconds off of the altitude-adjusted Academy standard that had stood for five years. He also took six seconds off the program's one-year old Freshman Class Record with today's performance.
Senior Scott Johnson and freshman Sean Maison competed in the 3000-meter final at the Lied Recreation Center this afternoon, with both runners placing within the top half of the 18-runner field. Johnson, competing in his first track event of the season, captured a second-place finish after clocking a career-best time of 8:06.14 – a personal improvement of nearly 25 seconds and the 14th-fastest time in program history, while Maison, in his first collegiate race on the track, posted a time of 8:24.89 to finish ninth.
Air Force returns home next Friday (Feb. 19) to begin a two-week homestand at the Cadet Field House. The Falcons will welcome nine schools to the Cadet Field House for the annual Air Force Collegiate Open, before an even larger contingent of nationally-ranked teams descend on the Academy for the Championships at the Peak meet on Feb. 25-27.
