Falcons Fall to Cal in Virtual Meet

Air Force picked up two first-place finishes, en route to its second-highest total of the year.
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force men's gymnastics team tallied its second-highest score of the season this afternoon (March 13), as it returned to action following a month off from team competition. The Falcons, competing in their first virtual event, tallied a 380.550 at the Academy's Cadet West Gym, while No. 11 California, competing at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, won the dual meet with a mark of 389.700.
The Falcons claimed a pair of first-places finishes, as freshman Jake Sampier won the floor exercise (13.600) in his collegiate debut and senior Allen Shadan took first on the still rings with a personal-best score of 13.450.
Shadan led the Falcons to a season-high team tally of 63.700 on the rings, as Air Force claimed three of the top-five scores and won the event by nearly one-and-a-half points (62.300, California). Senior Frankie Valentin finished second in the 10-gymnast lineup with a mark of 12.850, while freshman Garrett Braunton took fifth with a score of 12.600.
In addition to his win on the still rings, Shadan added a runner-up finish on the parallel bars after garnering a score of 13.500. Junior Noah Everett was the Falcons' top performer on the pommel horse, tallying a season-high score of 13.200 to finish third, while Braunton and classmate Oliver Zavel earned the same placements to lead the Falcons on the vault (14.050) and high bar (career-best 13.100), respectively.
Braunton, who scored a 77.100 as the meet's lone all-around competitor, also accounted for fourth-place finishes on the pommel horse (career-best 13.100) and high bar (13.000). Junior Collin Hickey earned the same placement on the floor exercise (season-best 13.200) and Zavel posted a 13.050 on the parallel bars to finish fourth overall and round out the Falcons' list of top-five finishers.
Air Force remains at the Academy next week, when they face Army West Point in a virtual meet at 3:00 p.m. (MT) on Friday, March 19.
