Garrett Braunton posted the team's top scores in four of the six events.
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – A short-handed Air Force men's gymnastics team opened the 2022 campaign with a fifth-place finish at the Rocky Mountain Open this evening (Jan. 15) at Cadet West Gym. With several gymnasts in COVID protocol this week, the Falcons were unable to feature a full lineup in several rotations.
Highlighted by a fifth-place score on the still rings (career-high 13.750), Garrett Braunton was the Falcons' top finisher in four of the six events. The sophomore earned an additional top-10 placement on the vault (14.050, eighth tie) and accounted for the team's top scores on the high bar (12.300, 18th tie) and floor exercise (12.150, 23rd).
Braunton was one of two Falcons to place within the top half of the field on the vault, as freshman Erich Upton tied for 15th with a debut of 13.900. Fellow freshman Patrick Hoopes tallied a team-leading 13.500 to tie for 10th on the pommel horse in his collegiate debut, while senior Noah Everett finished within the top half of the field (15th tie) behind a score of 13.500. Everett and Upton also rounded out the Falcons' list of event leaders, as the pair tied for 19th on the parallel bars with matching scores of 12.850.
With a score of 407.700, NCAA preseason No. 3 Oklahoma won its 22nd RMO title in the last 23 years, as it edged preseason favorite Stanford by just 0.200 points (407.500). Nebraska, ranked fourth in the NCAA preseason poll, finished just 3.350 points back with a score of 404.350. Arizona State, the top-ranked team in the GymACT (club) preseason standings, combined for a 375.900 to place fourth, while NCAA No. 10 Air Force (323.250) and GymACT No. 7 Rocky Mountain Pride (241.450) rounded out the team standings.
Air Force returns to action next Saturday (Jan. 22), when it heads to Norman for a rematch with Oklahoma.
