U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – RIT goalie Tommy Scarfone made 36 saves to lead the Tigers to a 4-2 win over Air Force In an Atlantic Hockey Association game Friday, Oct. 21, at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena. The two teams split the league series.
The first period was scoreless until the final six minutes when the Tigers took advantage of an Air Force turnover. Cody Lasosky pounced on a loose puck and his shot was saved. Simon Isabelle put back the rebound at 14:13 for a 1-0 RIT lead. In the final five minutes of the period, the Falcons killed four straight minutes of RIT power plays as the visitors had a 1-0 lead after one period.
RIT center Carter Wilkie gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead on the power play at 2:20 of the second period. On the rush, Tanner Andrew put RIT up 3-0 with a wrister from the top of the left circle. Late in the period, Falcons were on the power play, but a major penalty was called on Air Force's Willie Reim creating a 4-on-4 situation. Luke Rowe chipped a puck ahead to Clayton Cosentino to start the rush in the Air Force end. Cosentino's shot was saved, but Parker Brown put back the rebound at 19:14 of the second.
Air Force killed the remaining 3:30 on the Tiger power play to start the third period. Midway through the third period, RIT took a 4-1 lead. RIT forced a turnover in the neutral zone and transitioned quickly up ice. Elijah Gonsalves skated down the left wing and set up Tyler Mahan at 11:24. Late in the period, the Falcons pulled the goalie for an extra attacker in a 4-on-4 situation. Will Gavin and Brandon Koch controlled the puck and Koch set up Luke Rowe for a one-timer on the left side with 3:14 left. After a penalty on RIT, the Falcons had a 6-on-4 advantage with an empty net for the final 47 seconds, but were unable to score.
Sophomore Guy Blessing made a career-high 37 saves in the game for the Falcons. AF was 0-for-4 on the power play and RIT was 1-for-4. RIT outshot Air Force, 41-38.
"We got off to a really good start, but lost momentum due to self-inflicted wounds," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We had a turnover and they scored late in the first and then we had two back-to-back penalties. Their goalie was the best player on the ice and he was the difference. I thought we managed the puck better tonight, but we passed on some checks. We need to be harder to play against. We didn't invest enough in the physical game."
Air Force returns to action with a two-game series against cross-town rival Colorado College, Oct. 28 at Robson Arena and Oct. 29 at Cadet Ice Arena.
