U.S AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Five different Falcons scored as Air Force beat Alaska Anchorage, 5-3, in a non-conference college hockey game Friday, Nov. 4, at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena. Air Force evened its record at 4-4-1 and earned its first win of the season on a Friday night.
Air Force scored three goals in the first 11 minutes of the first period for a 3-0 lead. On the power play, Mitchell Digby's shot was redirected by Parker Brown at 2:47. Andrew DeCarlo also assisted on the play. The Falcons took a 2-0 lead when Austin Schwartz intercepted a pass in the neutral zone to start a 2-on-1. Schwartz set up Brian Adams for his third of the season at 9:27. Fifty-three seconds later, DeCarlo gave the Falcons a 3-0 lead on the rush. Sophomore goalie Guy Blessing fired a puck high off the glass and Nate Horn collected it in the neutral zone. Horn found DeCarlo who scored from the high slot. Alaska Anchorage answered with two goals in a span of three minutes to cut into the Falcon lead. Ben Almquist made a pass through the crease to Caleb Hite on the back door at 13:28. The Seawolves cut the AF lead to 3-2 by winning a stick battle on the back wall. Jarred White set up William Gilson in the high slot at 16:35.
Late in the second period, penalties on each team led to a 4-on-4 situation. Bennet Norlin just came off the bench and broke up a play as Andrew Kruse sent the puck out of the zone. Clayton Cosentino picked it up on the right side and skated in uncontested. Cosentino went top-shelf with the backhand for a 4-2 lead at 18:20.
Trailing 4-2 late in the third period, UAA pulled its goalie with 3:12 remaining. With 1:16 left, Jamie Collins scored from Hite and Ben Almquist. After the ensuing faceoff, the Seawolves pulled the goalie again. However, UAA sent a puck out from the behind the Falcon net, but Jacob Marti was there to collect it and score in the empty net with a shot from between the circles in his own end.
Air Force outshot UAA, 32-28. The Falcons were 1-for-5 on the power play while UAA was 0-for-4. Guy Blessing made 25 saves for the Falcons. Joey Lamoureux started in goal for UAA and allowed four goals on 28 shots in 46 minutes. Nolan Kent played the final 11:42 and made three saves.
"The two greatest things about tonight is that we found a way to win and we didn't get anyone else injured," head coach Frank Serratore said. "I will certainly take this win with a defensive corps that is so depleted due to injuries. Anchorage is a good team and they can play. It wasn't pretty, but you can't always win pretty."
The same two teams conclude the two-game series on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 5:07 pm MT at Cadet Ice Arena.
