U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Holy Cross' Anthony Vincent scored at 3:38 of overtime for a 3-2 win over Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey Association game Friday, Feb. 11, at the Cadet Ice Arena. Air Force earned a point in the Atlantic Hockey standings, while Holy Cross took two.
Holy Cross (9-19-2, 5-13-2 AHA) took the early lead when Jack Ricketts took a shot from the goal line that slid through the crease behind goaltender Alex Schilling. The puck caromed off the skate of an Air Force player and into the net for a 1-0 lead at 3:14. Air Force tied the game at 11:09 on a wrister from the right point by Atlantic Hockey's leading goal scorer, Will Gavin. Gavin's 14th of the season was assisted by his linemates Clayton Cosentino and Parker Brown.
Air Force (11-14-2, 9-10-2 AHA) took its first lead of the game at 1:39 of the third period as Willie Reim forced a turnover in his own end and went coast-to-coast, scoring with wrister from the right circle for his ninth of the season. Holy Cross tied the game at 8:53 as Jack McNab centered a pass from the goal line to the slot and Matt Slick scored to tie the game at 2-2.
In overtime, Holy Cross had two early scoring chances that were both saved by Schilling. Late in the period, the Crusaders dumped a puck on net that Schilling cleared to the wall. Vincent took the puck off the wall, skated out and scored with a wrister from the slot.
Holy Cross outshot Air Force, 39-37, in the game. Each team was 0-for-2 on the power play. Schilling made 36 saves for the Falcons, his second straight game with 35 or more saves. Erik Gordon made 35 for the visiting Crusaders.
"That just wasn't Air Force hockey tonight," head coach Frank Serratore said. "It was not indicative of our game. We just weren't there mentally from the beginning. Give Holy Cross credit, they are a well-coached team and they earned those two points tonight. We are not going to win many games when we give up 39 shots. Â Alex Schilling was really good tonight. He stayed cool even when things got chaotic around him."
Air Force and Holy Cross conclude the two-game series on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 5:05 pm MT at Cadet Ice Arena.
