With a career-best 81.450, Braunton became Air Force's sixth USAG champion in the all-around.
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Air Force sophomore Garrett Braunton captured the USAG title in the all-around this evening (March 25), as the 11th-ranked Air Force men's gymnastics team finished second in the team standings at the USAG Collegiate Nationals in Annapolis. Braunton, one of several Falcons to qualify for tomorrow's event finals, combined for a career-best tally of 81.450 to capture his first USAG title.
The sophomore accounted for team-leading scores in four of the six events, including a career-best, meet-leading score of 14.200 on the floor exercise. Braunton, whose floor score equaled the eighth-best performance in Air Force history, also paced the team on the pommel horse (career-best 13.600, second), still rings (13.500, third) and vault (career-best 14.450, fourth), while finishing among the top five of the 30-gymnast field in each event. A 13.250 on the parallel bars (12th) and a 12.500 on the high bar (ninth) rounded out Braunton's all-around tally of 81.450 – the 10th-highest score in program history.
With the victory, Braunton is the sixth Falcon to claim an all-around title, joining Jerry Michael Cline (1994), Greg Stine (2004, 2007, 2008), Nash Mills (2010), Timmy Wang (2016, 2017) and Jonah Urlaub (2018).
Freshman Erich Upton joined Braunton on the all-around podium, as he scored a 77.700 to finish third. Upton was the Falcons' No. 2 performer on the vault (14.400, fifth) and earned a top-10 overall finish on the high bar (12.450, 10th).
Backed by a meet-high score of 12.900 from sophomore Oliver Zavel, the Falcons placed all five gymnasts in the top 10 of the high bar. Freshman Charlie Miles finished second with a career-best 12.750, while classmate Bryan Woffinden tied for sixth with a personal-best 12.650 and the all-around duo of Braunton and Upton finished ninth and 10th, respectively. Zavel also shared the team lead on the parallel bars, as he and senior Noah Everett tied for second with matching, career-high scores of 13.700. Woffinden was the Falcons' No. 2 gymnast on the pommel horse after scoring a career-best 13.450 (fourth) and Zavel added a 13.000 to earn a top-10 finish on the still rings (10th), while senior Collin Hickey (13.700, seventh) and sophomore Jake Sampier (13.550, 10th) joined Braunton in the top 10 of the floor standings.
Air Force combined for a team score of 394.050 to finish second in the four-team championship meet. Eighth-ranked Navy tallied a 400.450 to defend its title from 2019, while No. 13 Springfield and No. 12 William & Mary rounded out the team standings in third (381.050) and fourth (375.950), respectively.
The top eight individual finishers from tonight's meet – with no more than two from any rotation group – will return to Halsey Field House tomorrow (March 26) for the individual event finals at 2:00 p.m. (ET).
