Brid O'Connell and both 4x1600-meter relay teams impacted the Academy's Top 5 on Friday.
DES MOINES, Iowa – Air Force senior Brid O'Connell accounted for the fifth-fastest 800-meter time in program history this afternoon (April 28), as 16 runners continued competition at the 112th Drake Relays in Des Moines. The Falcons made three improvements to the Academy's record book, while advancing the men's 4x100-meter relay into the finals.
O'Connell, competing in the seeded section of the 800-meter event, clocked a time of 2:09.61 to finish seventh and improve her No. 5 mark on the program's all-time standings. It is the third time in as many races that O'Connell has set a new career-best, deleting nearly a second off her time during that span.
The non-traditional 4x1600-meter relays were contested today, with the men and women both accounting for the third-fastest times in Air Force history. Senior Jenna Kill led a freshman trio of Sydney Weaber, Halle Hamilton and Ally Peterson to a time of 19:47.50 in the women's race, while the men's quartet of sophomore Luke Combs, senior AJ Kedge, sophomore Eli Bennett and junior Ryan Johnson completed the men's race in 16:46.51. The women posted their fastest time since 2018 to finish fifth in the 12-team field, while the men placed sixth out of 13 teams after posting their best time since 2019.
In preliminary action, the 4x100-meter relay of senior Wyatt Murphy, sophomore Jackson Connelly, senior Charles Dimnwaobi and junior Zac Larrier clocked a time of 40.46 to finish seventh in qualifying and earn a spot in tomorrow's finals. Larrier also competed in the first open 100-meter dash of his collegiate career, running a 10.87 into a strong headwind to finish second in his preliminary heat, missing a spot in the finals by 0.02 seconds.
The Falcons have two meets on the schedule tomorrow (April 30), as one group returns to the Blue Oval for the final day of the Drake Relays and another lineup will be in California for the Fresno State Invitational.
