HOUSTON – Veteran members of the Air Force women's tennis team showed flashes of their winning ways in doubles from previous seasons this weekend at the Houston Invite.
Doubles won the day for the Falcons in the opening rounds at UH, as a pair of Falcon duos claimed victories; Alexis Odom/Andrea Le defeated Divna Ratkovic/Chie Kezuka, 7-6 (4-0) to earn their second doubles victory of the fall, before falling to UT-Arlington's Tara Gorinsek/Ana Paula Jimenez, 6-4 ; 2023 freshman standout Arianna Van Houweling made her competitive debut, matching up with freshman Giovanna Sanchirico to take down Blanca Cortijo Parreno/Nina Skoric in their first match, 6-4, marking Van Houweling's first victory of the season, and Sanchirico's team-leading third doubles win.
The Falcons' showing in singles proved a challenge, as Air Force failed to pick up a singles victory on the weekend. Freshman Nadia Kojonroj narrowly fell in her Friday and Sunday singles draws, dropping Friday's contest in a three-set super tie break at the hands of Houston's Sofie Shouten and falling 7-6 in the second set of her Sunday bout with UTA's Francisca Vergara to go down in straight sets.
On day one, senior Isabella Flodin battled UH's Maria Dzemeshkevich to three sets after taking a 7-6 win in the opening frame, but ultimately fell in the super tie break.
Up Next:
Oct. 18-22, Air Force women's tennis heads to Salt Lake City to compete in this year's ITA Mountain Regional.
