U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - As the fall season progresses for the Air Force women's tennis team, the climb continues to get steeper, as the Falcons head to Salt Lake City this week to take on ITA Mountain Regionals.
The five-day event, hosted by Utah, begins Wednesday and extends through Sunday's championship matches. Play is scheduled for 9 a.m. MT each day.
Air Force enters the week's competition seeking bids in both doubles and singles for the ITA National Fall Championships – a distinction earned by the finalists in both main draws of each regional championship. Main draws in the Mountain Regional feature 64 singles players and 32 doubles pairings.
The regional consists of competitors representing Air Force, Boise State, BYU, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Nevada, UNLV, New Mexico, Northern Arizona, host Utah, Utah State, Utah Tech, Weber State and Wyoming.
Last Time Out:
Doubles won the day for the Falcons in the opening rounds of the Houston Invite (Sept. 29-Oct. 1), as a pair of Falcon duos claimed victories; Alexis Odom/Andrea Le defeated Divna Ratkovic/Chie Kezuka, 7-6 (4-0) to earn their second doubles victory of the fall, before falling to UT-Arlington's Tara Gorinsek/Ana Paula Jimenez, 6-4 ; 2023 freshman standout Arianna Van Houweling made her competitive debut, matching up with freshman Giovanna Sanchirico to take down Blanca Cortijo Parreno/Nina Skoric in their first match, 6-4, marking Van Houweling's first victory of the season, and Sanchirico's team-leading third doubles win.
The Falcons' showing in singles proved a challenge, as Air Force failed to pick up a singles victory on the weekend. Freshman Nadia Kojonroj narrowly fell in her Friday and Sunday singles draws, dropping Friday's contest in a three-set super tie break at the hands of Houston's Sofie Shouten and falling 7-6 in the second set of her Sunday bout with UTA's Francisca Vergara to go down in straight sets.
On day one, senior Isabella Flodin battled UH's Maria Dzemeshkevich to three sets after taking a 7-6 win in the opening frame, but ultimately fell in the super tie break.
